Indian classical music (ICM) is associated with a network of concepts that is thorough, flexible, and engaging in itself. In this class, musicians and thinkers of all kinds will find value in exploring these in as universal and relevant a language as possible. Many who have at least a passing familiarity with ICM are a...cquainted with "raga" (musical space) and "tala" (musical time), but some of the more interesting, and intuitively cross-applicable, elements of ICM theory lie deeper within. ICM involves perhaps the world's most systematic grammar of scales and cycles, in addition to diverse improvisational modes and a sophisticated aesthetic theory. This class will involve listening and learning through practical demonstration and participation.
