Elephants are a vital component of the wildlife tourism industry in …Africa, yet management of elephants comes with many challenges, especially when they live directly alongside people.
In the past, elephants in Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Livingstone moved through the National Park without impacting local residents living adjacent to the park. A period of regular power outages due to reduced hydro-electricity generation as a result of recent droughts meant that the electric boundary fence of the park was ineffective, and eventually elephants pushed the fence over and began to regularly move through residential areas at night, creating a dangerous situation.
Our work together with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife has now commenced to reinstate 5km of the boundary fence over the next few months with solar-powered electrification, to ensure power is available along the fenceline 24/7 to deter elephant fence breakages.
This project is supported by IUCN Save Our Species and is co-funded by European Commission - Development & Cooperation - EuropeAid

We are excited to announce that our project “Addressing multiple thr…eats to elephants and people by reinstating the boundary fence of Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park” is now supported by IUCN Save Our Species and co-funded by European Commission - Development & Cooperation - EuropeAid
With this support, we hope to be able to support the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to install solar-powered electricity on the boundary fence to prevent elephants from moving out of the National Park and into adjacent residential areas of Livingstone, thereby keeping elephants safe and preventing negative impacts of elephants on the lives and property of residents living adjacent to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
