ARRIVING IN HONG KONG TO MONITOR ELECTIONS
After contesting seven ...parliamentary elections and several local government elections, you could say that a passion for democracy and elections is in my blood. So when I was invited by pro-democracy groups in Hong Kong to monitor their elections I could hardly say no.
And I was also keen to offer encouragement to Joshua Wong, disqualified from standing in the elections. Joshua has spoken in our Parliament at a meeting I chaired. He has just been banned from traveling again to the U.K. - where he was due to receive the Westminster Award for Human Rights, Human Life and Human Dignify. So I decided to bring the award to him.
But my interest runs deeper than elections - important though they are. I serve as Vice Chair of the Westminster Friends of Hong Kong, am a Patron Hong Kong Watch and am a member of the House of Lords Select Committee on International Relations and Defence. I recently initiated a 3 hour Parliamentary debate on Hong Kong. During that debate I set out my serious concerns about the emasculation of two systems one country - and Hong Kong’s basic freedoms.
