Institutional accountability is vital not only because it supports institutions to more effectively accomplish their mandates, but also because it goes to the heart of credibility, sustainability and the 'well being' of an institution. An institution that does not comply with its own rules, regulations and accepted best practice standards makes itself vulnerable to collapse from within. Unaccountability of institutions, whether domestic or international public institutions, inevitably leads to a loss of trust and credibility in the eyes of those who rely on those institutions and the larger citizenry. Institutions don't need to be perfect, but they do need to be credible and this is derived from their institutional integrity and organisational performance in meeting their mandates.

"Ethical standards within the UN will not improve until those responsible for misconduct, rather than the organisation, are personally made to suffer for their actions."

As he leaves office after more than two decades of service, the UN official who exposed the sexual abuse of children by peacekeepers in Central African Republic reveals what really led him to resign.

Today the ICC sentenced Jean-Pierre Bemba to 18 years imprisonment for war crimes and crimes against humanity for acts of rape, murder and pillaging. In the decision, the Judges explicitly addressed the particular cruelty with which the rapes were committed. See the statement by the Women's Initiatives.

At a much earlier stage of this case, the Women's Initiatives filed before the ICC highlighting the charge of rape and raising concerns about the dismissal of some of the other sexual violence-related charges. We also urged the Office of the Prosecutor to supplement its evidence if needed to support the rape charges and to persuasively argue the case. They did, the judges listened, Mr Bemba was convicted and today sentenced to 18 years.

Today, the International Criminal Court (ICC) terminated, by majority, the case against co-accused William Samoei Ruto (Ruto) and Joshua Arap Sang (Sang) in the Kenya Situation, declaring the proceedings against them a ‘mistrial due to a troubling incidence of witness interference and intolerable political meddling’. However, this decision does not preclude new ICC or domestic prosecution in the future, and may be subject to appeal. The charges of crimes against humanity brought and confirmed against Ruto and Sang in the context of the post-election violence in Kenya are to be vacated and the accused are to be discharged.

  • RE: Forced sterilization, abuse of human rights Dear Sir or Madam, ...My name is Silvana Andric, I am 51 year old, I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and I came as a refugee from former Yugoslavia 20 years ago. I strongly believe that this is case of forced sterilization. The problem is about ten years old, and during this years I was alone in this struggle to prove that I have been serious ill, that I am in the pain, I was dependent and alone... I do not know exactly how many times I was looking for the help and I got help but never for the IUD, and how many years they helped me with symptoms ... Unfortunately, I believe that part of my bad luck is carried by my husband. I suspect that he might be psychopath, before the medications he was more aggressive and distant and now he is just distant but I have feeling that he would like to help me. I hope that I do not have to explain the level of my problem. Somebody might use this case to make different problems and we need to solve this problem together. I have been for the last ten years dependent to my husband, isolated in apartment, I have been severely abused by some media, followed by abusive people on the street, my basic human rights have been denied ... I am now without everything, without money for the surgery, without passport, without trust in reliable surgical procedure, here I feel alone... Today I got one old abdominal, pelvic, and chest x ray from the year 2009 and I compared xray from that time to one which I obtained couple days ago. It gets more and more complicated. The person who put the implant denies any involvement, one doctor a month ago after all my informations presented finally admitted that I have one IUD hidden in one tube... I am thinking why all this years, when the problem was not so complicated that IUD was not removed.... Now, it is complicated... I believe, yet not confirmed, it is just based on my analysis that I have certain blockage in some organs, blood cloths ... I believe that IUD has moved and that is part of this problem, that is why I have been for the last two years nine times in hospital, I had two pelvic inflammatory diseases, osteoporosis in one hip, and deformation of Fallopian tubes, changes in the uterus, kidney and bowel and appendix, there is obstruction... The surgery with more delay is more and more risky, and I do not know what to do... to who I should trust now ... can I put my life in the hand of the doctors who already did not perform reasonable care ... Who will perform the surgery now and to who I can trust, I have been isolated for too long and I have trust issue, the only communication is here with you ... For me now, every other country is too far from Canada... and more I wait harder and more complicated will be... What can I do now, can you help me... Sincerely yours, Silvana Andric 11 Grandville Avenue Apt. 512, Hamilton, ON, L8E 1J6, Canada Phone 289-389-5527, email, eandric@cogeco.ca See More
