Raising The Red Flag On Apple's Gray Flag Errors! - IMRAN

Here is another of those Sorry Wrong Number(s) User Experience ( #UX) bugs which plague many sites an...d apps, but continue in Apple Inc. products too. This has been an ongoing bug/issue over the years, which persists for me even in El Capitan, and even with a brand new MacBook Pro, and despite having rebuilt Mailboxes and reimported all emails.

I have a Smart Mailbox set up to gather messages with [SPAM] in the subject line (flagged/tagged by Gmail or other mail providers). This way I can glance them over in one place, select all, mark as junk, delete junk in a few keystrokes.

However, even when all the messages have disappeared/deleted, and are not in the Trash, or Junk, or even Gmail related folders, the (dvmb) Smart Mailbox still shows a number instead of resetting to zero and having no number in front of the name.

A similar/separate(?) bug is in the system generated 'smart'/builtin folder for "Flagged" messages. If you click on it in the left pane you will see subfolder showing how many messages are flagged with each color, and a 'smart' folder to list them if you want. In my case I only use the Red flag, and have about 332 in there. But there is a gray flagged folder showing 2 items though I have never used that flag.

To try to reset the PLIST or preferences file, I test flagged a message or two with a Blue flag. Sure enough, a new Blue Flag folder appeared below the Red and Gray ones. I then removed the flag from the 2 messages and the Blue Flag subfolder properly disappeared. But the gray one stayed on.

I then even flagged 2 messages GRAY, which made the Gray count to go up to 4, as expected. But when I removed the gray flag from those messages, the count did not go to Zero, but came back to the original stuck 2.

Back To The Future? Nuance & Dragon's Web Site UX SUX Past, Present And Future - IMRAN
One of the worst things a company can do is to be sending out emails and messages over and over exhorting you to buy their yet FUTURE unreleased software upgrade. It is even worse when you do click to pre-order the damn thing and first their own personalized UPGRADE link takes you to their web site which refuses to recognize the email address you are already a registered user with. THEN, t...he stupid website's security certificate appears to be incorrect. Finally you go to Nuance's ACTUAL direct web site using www dot NUANCE dot com on Sept 28, 2016.. only to find it is down for maintenance and will be back up on December 12, 2015! Living Under The Mouse Would Choke The Bird - IMRAN
I love #Strategy moves and bold acquisitions for driving #innovation and leading true #disruption not just ...turbulence or pure chaos. At least right now, I can't see Disney and Twitter as one. NC17 #Twitter where everything, and I mean everything, can be posted, would suffocate and die under PG13 #Disney! Does Mickey really want to choke the chicken, bird, I mean, bird?! Was it in part of some CEO wet dream and driven by seeing #Microsoft's (one day to be proven) foolish $26 Billion purchase of #LinkedIn? What do you think?

FaceBook Can't Do Math, Or Program Management. Or Is It Playing Another Game? - IMRAN
If it is really true that Facebook somehow was calculating a critical business metric incorrectly all this time, then it would suggest that they have extremely poor programming staff and program management. They are Below Average in calculating an Average correctly and a Fail in Program & Project Management.
How else would it be possible for somebody to decide a business model & revenues-...related equation without engagement and involvement of several people finalizing the formula to just calculate an AVERAGE?
Did somebody just say, "Hey Jack, go program a video view average!", and never checked on it? Is that how billion-dollar billion-user companies do programming of dashboards that involve billing, info to support its high stock price, and media/public perception of it?
If there is not even basic oversight of something as simple yet critical as that, then how are we supposed to trust Facebook on securing our privacy? If they say, "Oh we are taking care of security and privacy in the most effective way possible," should we just believe it? Or does it mean that just Jack and Jill were told to go take care of it, and FaceBook will post an apology six months or six years later? "Oops, we thought your data was secure."
Or is it a fake strategic apology to change a small but important formula? Could they be doing it to somehow create the impression of FaceBook being a video platform which competes with YouTube?
In any case, this just showed me that Facebook cannot be trusted in all the claims that it makes. It is either extremely poorly run or has a very self serving opaque attitude towards making itself look more successful than it is. Or both.
What do you think?

Why Would Apple Buy McLaren? Think Tesla Countering Strategy - IMRAN
I LOVE Apple.Inc products and Mercedes-Benz & McLaren cars. I especially loved the time ...when the two car companies collaborated for F1 Formula1 racing. It's Apple's strategy to counter Tesla innovation because eventually "cars will become data-centers on wheels" as I said in a 1999 speech in Detroit. And once that level of knowhow is built by Tesla, it would be a threat to Apple's computing and mobility products as well as operating systems. What do you think?

Deep (Water) Thoughts - IMRAN
Sonar Phone literally is a clever product name. I'm glad I got a nice #sonar depth sounder installed on my #jetski. The coolest ...thing is that it shows a display like units costing hundreds or thousands more do, but right on your #iPhone over a built in #WiFi. I tested it out the first day I went out to the #GulfOfMexico and #AnaMariaIsland #Florida from #ApolloBeach. Love how even in mid #September the #weather is hot enough for the #TampaBay #water spraying me to feel welcomed relief. Of course with a jet ski at high speed the white space gets garbled but overall the depth etc. show quite well. Of course situational awareness is. I saw 10-30 feet depths. Love the temps of 88F on the water. Safe #boating everyone.

CXX : How To Turn Customers Into Happy Loyal Excited Brand Ambassadors Praising You To The Moon & Beyond - IMRAN
Remember when people loved raving about great... products or companies or experiences to their friends? See how almost every time a consumer talks about a business or product is most likely going to be a gripe or complaint or horror story. It does not have to be that way.
User Experience is one of my mantras, and one of my the many reasons I love my favorite brands and products. Apple, Mercedes, Yamaha, and others. All of them do, or at least used to, have a manic passion for UX Design and Customer Experience. Most companies talk the talk much more now than actually do something about customer experiences being a joy not a chore or a pain.
One thing I always advice clients is this.
"A great customer experience mindset is not a destination but a good fist step. Customers expect a lot more than Great, but are most often disappointed and frustrated by all businesses in general. The rewards for an organization that lives for customer experience excellence (what I call #CXX) are many times greater than the cost and effort."
- Why do it? Because CX and UX have gone from average to atrocious in almost every industry.
- Who should do it? EVERYONE in your organization, including YOU, has to be focused on it.
- Where to start? Right where you are. Whatever you are doing. How does whatever you are doing impact the experience received by the client?
- When to do it? NOW. Not tomorrow, not next week, not next quarter. But Right NOW.
- What to do? Step back and look at whatever you are doing. See where your part fits in. Figure out a way to make it better. Understand what part does your task or effort play in a specific element AND overall end-to-end customer experience. Now mentally jump into the consumer's shoes, clothes, computer, car or whatever product/service you provide and imagine how they are receiving it. What would YOU want to see happen to make their experience better?
"UI & UX Design Are Not Rocket Science" as I say. But the success that can be achieved from them is out of this world.
A company that surprises customers with CXX will not just have a happy and loyal repeat customer but one of the best unpaid brand ambassadors and marketers in the world and beyond.
What are You and Your organization doing to achieve CXX, Customer Experience Excellence, to win these passionate consumers to become your biggest champions?

How IoT Risks Becoming The IoS#!T - IMRAN
"Hackers found 47 new vulnerabilities in 23 IoT devices at DEF CON" reported Computerworld. Add in recent developmen...ts with the term Internet of Things being slapped on to everything and you now have one (thousand?) more thing(s) to worry about.
Mix the #IoT craze with the #tech industry's currently rampant and shameless practice of rushing #gadgets & #software out the door without #UX, #quality or #security assurance, and then see what happens.
Their assumption that they will fix things later is bad enough, illustrated by smartphones catching fire, and self-driving cars not knowing when to stop until someone is killed. Now watch this crazy IoT rush to:
a) sell new things,
b) label existing things as IoT, and
c) adding IoT capabilities to things that are not yet ready to be safely connected to the Internet and Cloud.
Can you see why we have the possibility of real-life real-world real-bad real-disasters. Home doors and locks, kids toys and room monitor cameras, refrigerators, cars and other vehicles being remotely controlled by hackers is a nightmare.
How about power plants and major dams being made to do things that can cause large scale disasters geographically and economically. I do not even want to imagine the military and defense implications here. Do you remember one of my favorite movies, WAR GAMES?
I am a great champion of the Internet and Innovation, but some things still need work... a LOT of work... before I would be comfortable letting them loose on the Internet, or worse, letting the Internet loose on those things.

Returning from watching Storm Hermine I stopped to eat at the Boston Market near Fire Island. I stopped coming here a while back when they stopped serving a pretty good beef brisket they offered then. I had seen their advertising a new flavor of chicken so decided to try it out. My advice: Fast Food Consumers AVOID Boston Market's $10 ripoff Rotisserie Chicken Marsala. The taste is not even skin deep. The chicken is more boring than boiled. It is so bland even your dog won't eat it!

Storm Of Stupid Emergency Mixed Messages About Storm - IMRAN
Unbelievable. 0345AM Emergency Broadcast System @AT&T iPhone screeches alert to evacuate Fire Isl...and by 1PM. Huh? Why not send damn alert at 7AM? On top of that, according to The Weather Channel , Patchogue, where I am, is under storm watch until 10AM. So the stupid emergency alert doesn't even cover me or is too late. Incompetent mixed messages. But in either case, UhOh. 😄 Could've flown to Florida home (which stayed safe in the Hurricane by the grace of God) early Saturday but decided to stay in #LongIsland. #Suffolk County orders weird mixed messages for evacuations for #Hermine #weather ahead. Track Error Logs Or Implement A "Report" Function On Your Fail/Error Pages - IMRAN
Here is an example of decent website which has poor User Experience Design. ...I have replaced the "bookmarklet" from their site several times, but after a few days I get non-stop #fail #UX on Bitly. Using their bookmarklet takes me to a Del.icio.us link where choosing any platform like #FaceBook or #Twitter etc. to login fails.
What exactly does " 'module object has no attribute 'connectToTwitter' " tell a user? Clicking the FaceBook related button is even worse... a blank white box!
Good #UXdesign #CustExp #UI attention would, at the very least:
a) include someone checking logs regularly to see repeated errors and track down their source and
b) include a "Report This Error" button if checking log files is too cumbersome and the company is either lazy or does not have the resources for that.
What other ways would you use to ensure great user experiences?

My 50th Mac! - IMRAN
I first got to use an Apple Computer at the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. It was a an Apple II if I recall,... closely guarded my Professor Maulvi Saleem, who only allowed his favorites to get into his precious little "lab". If there is one thing I have not been all my life, it is any teacher's pet. LOL. I have been blessed to have been loved and respected and given individual attention and appreciation by great teachers from St. Paul's to Aitchison College to Columbia University, but I missed the classes on being a kiss @$$.
I, along with friends like Taheer and Theo (whom you have seen my in 1981 motorcycling photos and stories), was one of those casual engineering students who was lucky enough to get it just enough to manage. While having a hectic student political life lazily getting used to rushing around borrowing notes from other hardworking (and gracious!) classmates, usually the night before the exams.
I did blow a few years of academic time in student politics but was blessed to have kind teachers who supported my passing the remaining exams in time to graduate with the rest of my harder working and many also much smarter engineer classmates.
But, during that time, I got enamored with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak Woz's creation, Apple Inc., along with a few other pioneers of that time (like Sinclair and Atari), and later became a MacUser from the first model that came out.
I got lucky enough to design the massive entirely Mac based newspaper publishing network for Jang Media Group - Jang Classified, for Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, the visionary tycoon and group owner, who launched a 5-city, 3-country, 3-continent global newspaper on the same day. Even the New York Times took 3 years to come up with it's all desktop publishing switchover.
Over time, I have bought almost every major Apple product and product line. I still have working Apple products including Macs from 1989.
I was needing a new MacBook Pro and would have preferred to wait for the next model, which I hope will be a refresh. But, who knows if it gets announced in September or not. And even if it does, when there would be enough in stock.
Much that I love Apple over any other company's computing or software products in the world, it is a shame that Apple's legendary quality died even while Jobs was alive, So I now wait a few months before buying newest Apple products.
Tim Cook along cannot be blamed for it happening on his CEO watch. The uninspiring products are all coming on his watch of course...,speaking of which...
The Apple Watch is one more Apple product I have not even bothered to TRY on, by the way. I did NOT buy Apple TV either. The iPad 3 was the first one which I felt worthy of being bought and still love using!
Which is interesting considering I still have a working Apple QuickTake (one of the world's first consumer digital cameras), and even a Newton 110, the second generation of what was the world's first truly mind blowing Personal Information Manager.
In any case, I was out riding to the Smith Haven Mall, on Long Island, NY, when I went to the Apple Store. With the very courteous and professional staff & manager's customer focus, I ended up going home with the latest current MacBook Pro, another retina 1TB SSD 16GB highest CPU model... which, by the grace of God is my 50th Apple Computer.
