Good afternoon and thank you everyone for joining us today to hear from our leading scientific and scientists in public us about the public policy response to and science behind the Covered nineteenth. I'm Sean Sean President of 314 at grassroots Organization, a point seven million members did electing scientists to publish and helping scientists become more involved in public discourse. We are all bearing witness imperative, science and scientists voices are policy joined by. Doctor Stanley Pearlman, who is a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of who studied in research Verona virus including stars and nearly 40 years and also joining us. We have John Hickenlooper, Brewery owner and former Denver mayor and Governor who's running for the Governor, Hickenlooper manage Colorado sponsors to Crisis natural disasters and epidemics and is familiar role of local strong government in response to this pandemic well as the needs of the small business. An evidence-based policy solutions second half of the panel will be joined Barbara Bowl of Kansas State Senator Kurt running for US Senate after Eric Fagala ding an epidemiologist economist at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health. Thank you to everyone ahead of time we will get to as many of them as possible, but first our first Speaker family Promo begin with Doctor Permanent. Thank you sending us your time and expertise hoping you could start by laying out novel. Corona virus and why aren't from the seasonal flu well to completely defies a chronic influence of virus in the world of viruses are not reliable, but we do know about this Corona viruses that in some forms of disease and attract the one that's caused by influenza. In other cases, it causes more severe disease and the people we really care about because they not only develop severe disease and overwhelm health care facilities, some fraction of the much higher than seasonal flu die from the infection. It's called the Norovirus. We've never this particular advice before it's one of the started and made its way over human populations. We're still trying to figure out exactly how but because none of us have ever seen is we don't have preexisting immunity, which is another fence between that and because we all have somebody to some strains of flu, which may temper the infection. And before we questions I want to bring in Governor into the conversation all in your first term as governor your state was struck with a natural and disasters from a wild flyers wanted by the state. the Aurora Theater shooting vision of the prison's chief and massive flooding that claimed the lives and wiped out claims lives and wiped out 200 mile Road 20000 homes and you were loaded by both Republicans and Democrats that you have. Handled the crisis, effectively and passion. can you talk to a little bit about that? well? it is like going back in time because the chat we faced when I was governor, I am the 30 - four funerals are similar to what we're seeing in many ways. it breaks my heart because part of we did was we worked incredibly hard to billion seed and President Obama as Cabinet especially some of the people I've been who's running the housing and urban Believe it take take the lessons you learn great damage and relax and you use them to build resiliency build a a preparation that when something or or or the same time you're able to respond fully certainly learn how to stand up our care system dramatically in real time with a sense of results began to appear. you didn't have the the the latitude to you know. it wasn't like what to really move. There's really excellent standing up all your your your health care facility. All your emergency needs, but we haven't seen that in this crisis that is disconcerting for me. I think Governor Polis here in Colorado has done a great job but again and again the tools to expect to receive in federal, but the fact that we still passion off tests we don't have the test capacity to test to test all the people that we should testing is very frustrating. I think as a country, we're gonna go through some pretty hard times. I think the economic tailwind on this area. Tail to this is gonna gonna come be much more ferocious than it really needed to be, but what we'll find a way to get through it and hopefully we will we will make sure build that that structure for resiliency in a more permanent way well in this that it does lead to a question that that viewer why is it still so hard to get tested the virus? Why do some test? Why are they taking so long? The roots back is that something that you prefer. Doctor Pearlman. Yeah. That's a good question. We know why the test is taking to long to why we don't have enough test. It's because he didn't start test kits when we first heard of this in China didn't have kids and the developer not the same ones as the rest of the world, the ones designed. but WHO I'm not really sure sure decision was made, but it was me and then the tenth initial test gets were accommodated so they didn't work well and I think the problem was the FCC was do testing on executive diseases and they were able to cross the law. From this being an exotic disease or exotic disease with a pandemic potential, so they were they've been behind the eight ball to the hole and they were regulatory reason. I couldn't set up our own either in health care facility in health label collabs, so they were just like they don't know why it takes those things are working well. This is a test that should five hours and return, but we were thinking it up in my lap cuz we're perfectly capable of this will take us for five hours, so I don't results take that I've heard that free people they're hearing about two days. Which is ridiculous if they're in the community and they they can affect other people. They need to know what going on if they have this consistent with coaching. Especially for first responder their workers that have him out of Commission for 234 days is nine some are just being self isolating old two weeks extreme on system. How does this? I love it well and and this is also all of us having been environment that we aren't police used to so how does this respond? we have had no viruses you know HD Birds that we've seen for we've never seen the shutdown over it was different about this virus. You asking yes, I'm sorry I was doing with my continuously bringing telephones well. The difference is that what's really unique about this or it's a Corona virus like repair. So the Corona viruses are the ones that caused the comic. we've all dealt with those those have been in human part at least a thousand years. You know what though one set would came out in 2003, the one that cars and one of those well caused mercy is still causing murders with viruses that even though they could infect the airway where we get a cold, they didn't like to so they instead infecting in the lungs so people who are ages. Or infectious, with the ones who had disease in their lungs well by the time advice down to their lungs, so it was relatively easy to identify and the quarantine them hospital do whatever one met know both those have made way virus disease is in health care workers and one of the ways because they're the people are taking care of patients. They might do things like put tubes and growth so that they can breathe but pain specimens for Tricia. those are things that may cause their social cause could have disease. It's mostly health care. This virus does both it's like a cold virus infects the and then you can some kids that goes down to the lungs to be your diseases. So it's so much more of a worry cuz miserable like a cold virus if not more self and then also unlock a cold virus has to potentially severe disease. So this is about and it it seems that chances are that it it. it is being traded even when people are a dramatic and aren't showing sick. Yeah, This is something that's a real question because yes this. Reports that say that I don't quite understand as a pediatrician. How exactly right when you have absolutely no waited for the virus actually took her mouth cuz you're not sneezing. You're not coughing. So yes, the report say it we can transmit two to three days before he actually will below. Are you truly a senator or you just don't get that little scratch in your threat cold to begin with or that little cough that you say well, it's just the air is dry and I'm not really think it's being a cold or the trip dramatic catch and then if it isn't. These are questions that would mean that we will have a lot of trouble ever can people who look perfectly fine and walking around with enough virus in their knows and mental affect other people Well, that's almost comfort that the signs we point otherwise so Governor you mentioned he did the Obama and to help handle some of the crisis base and you know you offer for the US Senate now what what would see? Federal government either Trump administration directly you know legislatively from from the US Senate. Well, I think that right now we are in a not just a health care crisis, but an access clearly and all business owner. I can only imagine what all those CEOs and people that are own small business. what they're going through trying to figure out how to make payroll gonna get through fix eight weeks of being able to be in business and how do we make sure that all those employees can make their rent and put food on the table? so I want Congress to to have a. Of urgency and step in to make sure that we provide unemployment insurance out of the the gig economy workers a tip workers who generally aren't aren't able to get insurance. I think we need to give grants to or give all business that if they can keep always employed, making transition and grants, I think you know that unemployment insurance if you recognize their 10 point, eight almost 11 million people that are workers in those in the collectors or in tip of jobs. Important population keep them whole that when we do get to come back, we can wrap the economy back up Senator Bennett the senior Center in Colorado's giving every person in the country at $2000. You know what Andrew Yang proposed during the presidential race, This would be three months. It will not obviously, but abandon his proposed kind of facing it out the people that don't really need it I think also you know we can utilize resources of federal government much successful the National guard when we have a file fires to great effect, Well-trained. They organize and they're in your own state. Obviously theme is already being utilized and actually in Colorado. We're using National Guard as well. so you can help those businesses meet you know here and announced today and I think yesterday that for the first time ever a restaurant that has a liquor license to sell and I think those kinds of little things right can't have customers in, but don't let himself pitcher of margaritas to go for real. You know those differences and said the government can do to help make small businesses hands hoping that you talk about. I understood own you're a restaurant owner that is such a you know. it's a it's a complicated business. also one that Cannot operate it will go out of their home. Now I'm in Pennsylvania, the governor has us to all non essential workers to stay in their homes and I just think about the the the workers and the whole effect that that will have on our economy from nail salons hair salons to. Restaurants and fitness energy and people that so many people that have three months of living expenses, never mind two weeks. Well, that's why they're all government needs to step in with that unemployment insurance and to make sure that their ways to keep them resource. I think we also have to you know as sign look to sign up for direction but also looking at in a new way. So when we think of our for sponsors as our firefighters officers but generation three workers are essentially they got to stay on the Jets. How we're gonna get food that isolated with people. Hair and sell the prescription gonna become incredibly mess this pandemic. There are different ways of thinking about done before our workforce is you know we need to make sure that these first responders in grocery store workers and and prescription drugs workers a healthy and for the the risk and sacrifice they're making I absolutely agree. I mean today my my oven broke the other day and when you are mostly relying for us. Food in an oven is just an an inconvenient. I felt some guilt asking somebody to come out during this, but the man, the service repair man said that concern essentially because if someone's refrigerator you know that that is a huge problem, especially right now we are getting some questions in one is for you. Doctor Perlman from Jennifer, she says. I'm a nurse and code, 19 and symptoms by these but I'm waiting for my test results Monday. Have there been any cases reinfected or once I'm over this safe for me to be treating your patients again being nature intensive care unit? Okay. I picked. yeah. Okay. Yeah. So this is good because what we think is we think actually our immune what you've gotten it once more severe infection, but our results show there's there's there's couple of things so first people who had calls there was he's done a long time ago in the 19 sixties showing that a person who had seen some of the. Could then be experiment again and they got so that immunity was not particularly effective at the end. We really don't know what songs to the deep long. In fact, the number of cases are so small. The life of being infected again was pretty small from what we know about ammonia in general, you get some pretty good protection because virus virus always true, but this user should be protected reinfected we'd like to do which is think problems right, but Jennifer who's working in a few have her be. Really negative for the virus now the test we do is which is the inside of it. We don't prove nobody working in a PR CU out of the bar, be a little higher, be sure that there was no, but there's someone is too seem to have infected and then get reaps and so we don't we don't know how common it is something that we still have to figure out. well in that can you talk to us at the President and his press conference made some pretty bold statements on possible thick treatments for coveted 19. you know it see that that would be a very unhealthy of the scientific research working to try to develop suss out therapies make sense or some of these viral aerial medicines. Can you give us a little more? Adding to that, yeah, so I think that most of us think that there's one drug out there will be effective against this virus. That's one that's an interview that's what has been marketed by Gilly and sciences really no cuz it's interesting at least it's a drug that should work the the drugs that are evil area or actually autoimmune disease. Also the coral point they they worth test tube at high concentration and the the cavity that they were first gets into cells, not teaching to the biology, but the buyers gets the cells in two different ways and this is the concentrations inhibit. One of those so that would be great at mechanism, the main mechanism would not be inhibited by the drug so unless the drug has effects so instead of inhibiting the restoration do something to the immune, then it's probably work side is that all these infects all these kind of virus infections. We have worse when the virus starts away. so it's a lot of the host of units. So if you haven't if you're ready to have a lot of tissue destruction from the bottom, now you knock off the rest of it, you may still have ongoing tissue response so from studying animals and sorry, and we think it's most important that people get heated really early so ideal thing. If I had to fight design, the ideal thing it would be to figure out so a hundred people come in for 19. They all have mild symptoms, but who the 15 will go on to this disease. 30 - five going to worst disease and if you could figure out who that was, you would drug to the 15 severe disease. So if you had a biomarker which we don't that would be a huge help get drugs to them. And then the thing is if the drug could be then you could give it lots of people like Tammy Atomic, for example, people just when they starting it fit in your space. Get the other child is escaping it. You give him tummy fully much better. You wait two or three days makes a half a day in their Do here you can give an oral drum, Then I think we will really make a difference. Brooklyn would fit that bill if it worked, but I don't think it's gonna work and Governor we have a question for you so how do governors and experts to make decisions in times like this and how does a governor decide how far in a time like this where States shutting down all my businesses? That's a great question. and there is no there's no textbook on on how the crisis like this. I think this the scientific method is is a tool. and and part of the scientific method gather all the existing Internet and make sure you have the people around you plus is done here in Colorado and what I did is I would gather a an ad hoc test force of the smartest people I I knew around any given crisis and bring them on. I mean literally Hayley if not multiple get them in conversation and if you get that the the experience and knowledge and the intelligence or big issue and and diversity of. There end up with a higher probability of getting too cuz really, that's what science is. It's taking the facts as we see them and be trying to predict my look like and how you can have a future where you can, you don't have problems that are so so difficult to solve. I think that says of having decisions in real time if it's just one or two people taking all the decisions, we're gonna make mistakes and they're not gonna know how to go. but if you get a budget through variations of this type of crime in in previous experiences, then you're much better jobs. You gotta go all in here. We gotta close the restaurants because we can see what happened 10 years or 40 years or two years of country and friends and used to make predictions about Iran's will affect the future. I think is fundamental to science and common sense the government could governing you said has concerned me a factor. Perlman is I would have drives or actually found right now, the thing that there's still for blood and I mean I would. Who probably had the the virus? would they be able to transmit that through a blood donation doing so the visa I've I've taught the person who actually said the head of the whatever station of is an Iowa. So I talked to him a bit of us and so what we know fast is that virus clean the bugs. Remember we don't really measure virus RNA but virus could be in the blood early after infection and more people who have severe disease people who are a symptomatic are likely to have virus in their blood, but you know it's one of those calls. There, it's really hard to say well, it's perfectly safe as far as suspect a virus, so even if it's in your body somehow has to track its way back to your lung and cause an infection following the outside not from the top of the lungs from underneath. so it's probably does that seem probable you know we don't know enough is usually enter from the top of these cells. Victor from the bottom. I don't know that about this one well enough to know what it's gonna do. it's I would think the combination play very little if not knowing where it's infectious or not and the likelihood. Being the only at certain times of infection, but I one has to cautious in fact, someone who's had the disease. I think people are doing so it's 20 - eight days and you can donate again. Ironically, people have peppers again interesting, but we only have a few minutes left with hoping that I share some finals and hopefully help to give a sense of of of security that we we can get I'll go first just because it does take me back to 2000 thousand nine when I was, I was married and it it seek at the height of that find crisis and when we pulled all the the least the visitors and the leaders of our non community and our we had a press in City Hall and the message was we've been through worse than this and this looks like and Lord knows there's all around us and in the past what we've done in McDonald's, we've joined form. We've worked our way through it and that that commitment. That you know the community comes first. I'm not gonna worry about my dental benefits. maybe it's I'm not gonna get money as I used to I might have to stop doing what I've been doing and really commit myself to a community effort. that's what's made America so I still feel optimistic about it but it's it's again. It's gonna be a great deal of love. I mean my heartbreak for all the small businesses that are gonna get washed away if any the elderly they'll lose a couple of their last year's the status is sometimes hard to do just gotta work past that. Recognize we are gonna get through this. And and we will get through people. stay inside. absolutely and I I just wanna add that that I completely agree with that. The thing is to remember that this is a virus so it's not matter and we not have immunity to it, but we have ways doing with it and some of the things that I talked about are going to make the most likely that people get infected and even if they get infected if we keep the infection at a certain rate, the health care system deal with it with all its flaws and you know so we just have to really know this disease, but there are things you can do to me. My setting infected and you have those things well. I thank you for joining me today and I put your family stay well and you know the work you're doing causing. Thank you. Doctor Promo. Thank you. Governor. Thanks John and next in the second half, I will be joined by Doctor Bowen, a physician to state senator current running for the US Senate in Kansas and Doctor Eric Fink, an epidemic economist for Chan School of Public Policy. You may be ladies been in. Hi demand. So thank you everyone many question time again we will try to you know doctor I just wanna give a quick introduction to Barbara Bowl is a physician I'm in the Kansas State. Senate bullying has been a religion for health care access and has fought to expand Medicaid in if elected would become the first female physician serve in the US Senate Eric, she thing is an epidemiologist and help us and a senior fellow at the Fishing. American scientists here to answer questions about the virus are being the country. Thank you both for us. I want to bring Doctor Hagel Day. please start by what what is a pandemic and they start a pandemic is an epidemic grows very big, but the long story is it has a pendant mic in an epidemic. Having difficulty doing it in country and within this country, there's not just important but they're the cases are actually community spreading things the most dangerous kind of that we identify so I think the pandemic is very very obvious and we've been calling dependent from many of us and the risk is almost everywhere. It's because we've lost control of containing it to a few countries and beyond just initial cases. so this is why it's spreading everywhere and we have to assume it was for example in the US and many are cool community. you don't have testing to identify them all. Okay. I wanna bring that the senator into the company our our mission at 314 is to bring scientists into elected office under the premise that had received experience the proof the legislative priorities as well as the process Doctor Bowen used served in Kansas Lara as both a Republican Democrat, but always issue so tell us a little bit more about yourself experience and Shawna first off as a physician, I never really was about hyperpartisanship or partisan labels. I was always about helping and doing the best for. Overtime in the Kansas Legislature, I found myself not always agreeing with people at the top and Brown back in his image and found myself going back and standing against certain things and and really fighting off that the things that I had my situation had public education and making sure that access to health care and that that those those people I was not able to sell. Ultimately, I take parties. I did endorse our now. Governor Kelly as a credit crossbow. And gonna she's there now during this swing need a good leader and I'm pleased to be part of that group that again to make things situated and we are we are hoping to help to get you there. you know Doctor Fielding you had mentioned the testing and I think there is some confusion among folks as to what we gain through the testing if you could kind of lay that out the the personal effects of testing but. What we're trying to accomplish public health standpoint right so the pump containment an absence vaccine the cornerstone of containing is testing test, then contact trace you've identified case you ask what did you have symptoms and ask everyone that you were in contact within like a shoe leather detective work to these other cases and once you've other potential you create a perimeter, according to them, test them isolate them pointing them. That's how we beaten midnight thanks before next, but if you don't identify. You can't have an epidemic without seeing and furthermore when everyone a case develops, you testing the new does he developed right now in this so bad in cases of people who died the previous weeks and LAPD police officer didn't get as a result for 10 days. We're basically testing as they're arriving in the ICU in too late because to stop the epidemic, we have to do a career put out massive missing drive thru testing test anyone who developed Mediately energy in them, and that is how South Korea. Dolphin almost flattening they basically defeated it without all these Mass lockdowns and they're hurt businesses and families. so that's what we have to do. but until we get there to get the testing the demonic cuz I'm only gonna get specially knowing our health care citizen health care capacity in affordability of health care and do you have any sense of you know that the Trump administration has for. I feels like weeks now that the testing is gonna be largely mailroom and a quick turnaround failed to. That you have any sense of when happens. Yeah, it's yeah. There's so many bottles cuz the test kits that don't probably mentioned that was just one of the test kiss is only an initial, but we also have another bottleneck ensure the chemicals needed to examples. and now we have a new bottle neck and the sample the swats versus collecting special right now. lab corn run tens of thousand that's per day, but the major problem is clinics. Every doctor clinic have the specimen tubes in supply to send them. All the suppliers are mostly out, so we have so many bottlenecks right now and that is revealed so much learning preparation for sites and basically being realized epidemic was coming for the two months that we've been selling about at the top of our lunches and that's why we had more artists in office leaders, I think would have reacted much sooner and potentially had prevented tenfold if not 20 fold this epidemic that we have well and I mean you know you you can align from me. That run China and why I'm supporting our engineers exactly very systematic approach. I mean just on an individual somebody asked me how my parents are and I said, well, my 80 year-old father who's soak, but as a symptomatic was automatically tested in Thailand, where he lives everyone's sitting whereas you know my not 30 - nine mother no matter what she's in in in Pennsylvania, you know they're they're protesting. luckily she lives in a fairy rural rural area can keep her eye it it Understand how the United States can't get ahead able to get ahead of this and it seems it does come down to leader Doctor Billy. You know you are running at what do you as a senator? you would be doing right now to try to do this well. I tell you first off what I would have done before and that is make sure we need a government that everything in place when the President eliminated the pandemic person board system for. The city be started out behind and when I I risk we need to be sure that good stable government with preventive thoughtful what we can do in crisis is in place. That is what good government is, and you know you have to have people. that said they have to be thinking of help react like once you're reacting proactive and sadly when I run this country, the fact we're far behind. Now, it's it's gone, so it's my exponentially and we're not going to be able to contain it. Some of these other countries have done. It's too late for that the person they're getting online right now from Ron, it says, Is it true that both in human services and Imperial College of London issued a report saying that we've already done to quote curve and that we are lady looking at a minimum of 12 to eight before we can expect to return normalcy. That's a cool question. Answer and it's difficult to define what normal is in these times, but what is your doctor Figure do some on where we how we can do this. Yeah I agree next year. Indiana 90 will be very different than what we've ever experienced before. I don't think we'll live in the same kind of womb because it's attainment that we're gonna do is gonna be longer than one month. If you have a new similarity, said I've owned likely closed for the semester because what people. Absence of a vaccine and all these mitigation stretch it can slow you know the flatten the curve. It's like dropping water on a on a walk. You're never gonna put it all just by dropping water dust containment measure sound and when it said. be sure to put you off the breaks and the virus will reach this resurgence is whether it's happens and it depends a commitment to fight this is why we need to mobilize and have cord between scientists and public health nurse and government. that said we need to put this down also need to mobilize resources such as the. To do massive contact tracing massive testing if we let offered when the cases are lows over that complacency is what's gonna rebound even worse. So this is why together the leaders have to work the scientists coordinating and stopping us and but ultimately, I don't it being defeated until at least February 20 or hopefully a vaccine ready well. yes, can I add in have seen ledge Kansas as people having an understanding? what it means to flatten the curve? They don't know exactly never had language like that before and so what what doctor saying is we have the virus that we want is instead of this exponential rise would overwhelm our health care every other said we would have so many people wouldn't have the ability to take care of people from what we wanna do in fattening the curve is people will still get really not as many they will, but will then have enough end machine sitters and drugs and whatever else it is supportive. Take care of those who are ill and made for people who have other disease processes and next week normally use ventilators for and in our bills. So it's that and again it's gonna be at least a year until we have a mitigate and stop the scene with the vaccine, but we just don't want that huge jump up where we're starting to make decisions and lives. this person does not okay. and that is a great point because. Outcome death rates will soar once you're above the hospital, health and capacity. another danger of that is we can't hospital drop workers say a lack of active equipment and 90 - five Mass protective gear. Many doctors are literally out of these personal gear and the cycle, and we use them, which is actually not very safe and if they are basically corn infected or Commission, our hospital capacity will drop like a rock. That's actually what happened in 120 -. Or corn dogs and hence they're sort of over sense and we do not want a bent 40 percent of our population to to because our doctors and nurses are also putting commissions again. What we need is public leader tell our problem leaders. These are the parties or else terrible outcomes if you don't plan well and just to put in Brown being earlier today that these mitigation strategy reduce the bill by up to half although that still would be a very high, but it would reduce the demand health care system by thirds. Yeah. absolutely, it's it's it's in turn just like exponential and a decrease in which we bring cases the capacity line is huge on investment any cases necessity. Those are the people who they will die if they don't have ventilators. It's an a penny pepper or as an actual pound of return well and and Doctor Blake. to address this question, you know a lot of people are frustrated. By not having a clear message to leaders as tennis is going to be over part of that is because we don't know what is going to be over. But I'll just later. I think you have a physician. I think you have a better understanding of what goes into making those decision how to communicate with your constituents like so when will the government so somebody writes in when will the government start this won't be over for a year or more when everything is developed expo. It directly, but can you talk about sort of behind that? and I really appreciate that question cuz everyone of us wants to know living in a changed world and it's scary. It's different. I'm at home by myself finally getting done in the Legislature and but you know life as we know it is changing so this question in a little way was asked in Kansas. Why did the state Senate not yet an update and a briefing from our Secretary? Until two days ago, answer was because there wasn't enough information like to do that. it. This is developing literally hourly things are changing so to expect a statement to be made about when this will be able as soon as House. If you make a state that everyone is criticizing you cuz you were running so I think people being cautious and they have to say and know that this is going to be a long time Doctor Phil. Confirm with me, you know is a possibility. I mean this may get better over temporarily, but I'm back. it's never going to go away, but so so we don't know exactly what happened. I would be our responsibility to listen to our leaders our government health Department people who as they say during I'm doing it and you know live each. don't try to predict alright well. can I go to to to whatever May we don't know yet and we're not going to know until we know so again changing our whole way of being a. Everything we do have and and take things in and I try much people the information they know tend on it. what we do is fall going out. Unfortunately that already we had a President talk about a possible malarial treatment that might we don't know yet. We can't rush out and I'll go by anti Malaria drugs because it it. We don't even have that the answer or much to know that so following those who know sites and will give us I intend. Nations Nations and we need to be doing I heard the view would agreed this, but I I was very frustrated by them. You know that is only going to make the job searchers even more difficult if they compared to hard to get because people are boarding it like they are paper towels right now, but we have another quote from from for Doctor Feelgood. he asked. Can you comment on the detective specificity sense balls, positive and false. Negative of many of the current test code, 19 vegetarian, but let's see let's see what you got so that is question so sensitivity is of the total test total cases. what percentage we pick up as positive speech is what percentage of non cases do we quickly identify as non specifics like present in which you run of the true cases, and that is the false negative. is a really high. so the sensitivity you don't know for sure because there's. The test in China made it's around 50 percent accurate and I think the specificity that the sensitivity, which means we're getting a lot of potential faults you have seen this for 14 cases of the marriage tree at the back from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship they had testing negative indeed positive just as they were blamed and that was actually really fun because it's clearly showing that the there's a lot of negatives but two that attitude the big curve of you know of fighting against an overruling, the CDC, scientists says No don't put them on the Bank. It is. Dangerous you need to keep them similar other healthy against and these kind of work technical things were getting me all the activity of this test is not and look. 14 people have subscribed and let them on the plane. It's policy makers overruled the public health fitness and those are the points that really missed. We know that fear where of them, but when you've ruled overrule politics that is when scientist needs to step up and say, look public health should reign. but. Especially the repentant. Well, add into another a question that we received this I don't see the name here, but the person was as a a a science elected official serving on city Council. How can I best serve my kids my scientist had on while many prices great question is involve. Thank you to all people who are in elected office now you're earning your money. That's because that's what this is stepping up and being there for the people of crisis. Yes, hopefully not always in crisis. Take it this is when we really the government so by my first answer is follow the data and try you are listening to and make sure you all so are are doing that and so having a stem back or we'll help you do that. I know that it's helped me very minor knowing how to information whether it is test data or it's just news and that people call fake news or you need to know that you can trust the source and knowing knowing what the in charge of the science are recommending and helping. So communicating effect that this is what you should be doing and and that needs to model modeling the behavior needs to be followed so people look to you as an elected official is someone do the right thing That was one of the big hard things about having to stay in Kansas Legislature did not am. I think we were the last in the nation to continue to work and yes, I need to be there and what the people but the physics. It was a huge Internet. follow the recommended and not be in a group of more than 50 people. At least we were able to always be washing and social distance to life but elected officials follow the rules and Brown in Stem. You know that that is what is most important and I I imagine you had a pretty full week and just later this well it. it will assure people you know. Interestingly, one of the things we were doing our people that were still not being that this was real and now this. Could just solve we had our public health and welfare chair in the Senate tweet out that I will not be famous guidelines that we need the economic. I'm gonna be out there doing what I normally do and that is all this the last time in a in a time of crisis, it should make it be made our own opinions, but not on science. This is real people. you know the whole world does shut just because of politics that we we really have pandemics and this is the real thing and You know, I wish more people there were signed that instead being political people will to get this the temper us as US citizens as world systems as community members to be pulling to God physically about. yeah, but it in a way that's gonna be supporting each other doing what needs to be done. Public health isn't about me as the individual about all of us and try to curb ZZ spread, and that's a different way of doing things than we're used to. We went up in a world of vaccinations and antibiotics. Tamiflu and Sunny. We have nothing this fire is new and so we have to go back to the old and and and the social distancing and following the rules and warranty to all those that we need to do that. Yes and and we we had a physician on our our call yesterday who was advocating for us to to change the terminology behind substantiating and instead physical distancing humans and we we need to be social just shouldn't be physically. Together I I've that I thought you know, is there anything else that you'd like to share with folks before we let you go, I just no. I don't say Austin and let's get peace for our health care workers cuz they are being personal protective equipment for our care workers and and building do you where you know are you hopeful as being able to accomplish that I will put in terms. Getting into every health care worker given how big this epidemic growing by the deputy state epidemic nervous supply a lot of these government contracts not gonna get procurements for all of them right away. So there's gonna be a shortage and we're gonna be unfortunately having a fight over scarce and scarcity in America, one of the wealthiest guys in the world. they should still be fighting more, especially in like this. We need good evidence, science driver seat, so I'm hopeful. Doctor Bowen final thoughts you wanna leave there's a couple once be calm and thoughtful and reasonable rules all what people are suggesting think about is gonna be a time maybe did you haven't ever done before or ways of know? there's gonna be for kind of time my son who's in law school, he said. Now that has to stop him he has a little more time to act food and eat help. so that's a positive outcome for all of us be. Need to be thinking about pot meters in who we elect and this push up of our world? it's time to putting that in anything about who are the best to be elected who do the things that we need of crisis because needs strong government country put it on the hopes it and and let's make sure that we keep that in mind and and work together for the good so when ported it goes back to the Pack in the fishes maybe we all need your out how to share and make sure that you know it's not about me but it's it's us and I am very confident that we live in a time that we will obviously get through this and we will do the best that we can and that as a country are really the best country we are a country but we have to act like and behave that way and trust our leaders to that job done and. Doctor King said. Do the science about politics This is data. That's right, well, people and Doctor time and and the wording we we are living through very stressful times and I decided normal to feel anxiety over the situation. You know, I shared anxiety, first responders and health care worker and the work that but it's important to not let anxiety intangible because panic needs bad decision and. Be at health so be well. stay safe practice distancing and think about your neighbors. Thank you. Thank you. I'll see you bye bye.
