Recently the Springfield area has been hit with numerous car B&E's and stolen cars.

This is a friendly reminder to everyone. The car breaks we have been investigating involve the victims LEAVING THEIR CAR DOORS OPEN. Victims park the cars on the street, in their driveway and in public areas ;eaving the doors completly unlocked.
Thieves look into the cars and if they see anything of value they simply open the unlocked door and steal the item.
PLEASE LOCK AND ALARM YOUR CAR D...OORS!!! YOUR DRIVEWAY AT HOME IS NOT A FORCEFIELD ... LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE HOME.

Also many newer model cars come equiped with keys that do not have to be put in the ignition to start their cars. The key just has to be inside the car and all you do is push a start button. The SPD has had a few stolen cars lately where the victims are leaving the car doors unlocked and also (believe it or not) leaving the key that starts the push button ignition inside the console or the glove compartment. It takes two seconds for a car thief to open your car door and push the ignition button to see if it starts. Please lock your car doors and pocket your keys !!

Outstanding Arrest By Springfield's Finest ...

At 1:30 A.M. this morning Officers Daniel Moynihan and Shavonne Lewis responded to a report of a Breaking & Entering at the "Liberty Gas Station" 668 Liberty Street. The officers responded and discovered that there was in fact a B&E and could see that Newport Cigarettes were stolen and the glass window was shattered.

After securing the buisness the officers waited until the owner responded to look at the stores surveillance video.... The officers observed the video and right away developed a likey suspect.
Two nights previous Officer Christian Cicero and Adam Provost stopped a suspect in the early morning hours and questioned him about possible breaks. On that morning the officers could not tie him to any recent crime.

Officers Moynihan and Lewis had knowledge of that stop and this suspect matched the description perfectly. At 5:15 A.M. these officers responded to a hime in the immediate vicinity and found the 14 year old suspect wearing the same clothes and had stolen items from the store. He was arrested by Lewis and Moynihan.

This 14 year old has been arrested in the past for similar crimes. He will be arraigned in Juvenile Court today. He is a suspect in many more recent store B&E's. The Juvenile Division are investigating these recent crimes and additional charges are likely.

Nice police work by these very alert officers.

Be Careful When Selling Your Valuables On Line ...

Over the past month the Springfield Police Department is investigating several cases where citizens complained about getting ripped off with counterfeit bills. These complainants stated that they offered to sell their property on-line and advertised on the "Offer-up" webpage. When they met with the potential buyer and sold the items, it was determined later that they were given couterfeit money for the sale.
In one of the cas...es the Springfield Police Department is investigating an incident where 23 year old male victim met with a subject described as a black male, early 20's, 6 ft tall, about 190 lbs on a side street in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield. In this cae the victim sold his I-Phone Pink SE for $300. The suspect took the phone and left in a cab. Turns out the three hundred dollar bills were all counterfeit. The victim discovered the bills when he attempted to deposit them in an ATM and it would not except them. The victim then noticed they all had the same serial number. The victim then drove to the police station to report the crime.

Another case we are investigating took place in the parking lot of "Taco Bell" on Boston Road. This time a mom and her son were selling some expensive sneakers on the "Offer-up" website. A suspect matching the same description as the earlier crime met them in the parking lot and paid them for the sneakers with a fake one hundred dollar bill.
The suspect left in a cab again after the crime.

The serial number on the bills is - LB70911200E

Detectives in the Major Crime Unit are investigating these crimes and it has been determined that other police departments in Western MA are experiencing the same crime.

WE suggest that if you are selling your personal items on-line make sure you meet in a public place (the best place is the parking lot of your local police department!!).
Take a picture with your cell phone of your property and when you are making the transaction take a picture of the buyer.
Never meet with a prospective customer at a strange address, check the currency of the bills and never meet somebody you don't know alone.

These cases are under investigation. If anyone has ANY information please contact the Major Crimes Unit at 413-787-6355.

127 Spring Street for a report of an assault with a handgun on the fifth floor of that apartment building. The female victims had fled the scene in a panic and were waiting for the office...rs to arrive at Spring Street and Pearl Street.

The responding officers obtained a description from the females who stated they were working the area for a local energy company conducting door-to-door sales and a survey. They went on to state that they knocked on a fifth floor apartment and were greeted by a male who right away pointed a silver semi-automatic handgun at their heads. This male demanded to know who they were and who sent them. The male then grabbed both of their lanyards that hung around their neck with their identification. The suspect held tightly on their ID's and would not allow them leave. This male then continued to point the gun and threaten them repeatedly.
After a few minutes of yelling at them and pointing the gun at them he said if they called the police he would "blow their heads off". The women then fearing for their lives fled the block and called police right away.

The above officers responded to the apartment in question and were greeted by the suspect matching the description. The officers placed him into custody and found a loaded silver 9mm semi-automatic handgun inside the apartment that was fully loaded.

The victims positively ID this suspect as the one who had just pointed the handgun at them and holding them against their will.

Fantastic Policework Results in Arrest of "Armed Robber" BEFORE He Gets to Hold-up Supermarket in Mason Square ....

The "Food Mart" located at 910 State Street was held up by gunpoint five times since February 9th 2016. During these Armed Robberies a partially masked person with the same height and weight, physical demeanor, wearing the mask and the same black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, brown work boots and distinctive colored gloves in each robbery. The suspect also br...andished a handgun in the five robberies.

Last evening at 9:25 P.M. Officers John Ruyffelaert and Ranuel Bibby were on patrol in Mason Square. These two officers had knowledge of the Armed Robberies at the "Food Mart" on State Street and were very famliar with the suspects description. The officers were performing a "directed patrol" in the immediate vicinity when they spotted a suspicious male wearing the same outfit described in the previous five robberies. The officers kept this suspicous male under their surveillance as they watched him pull over his head a black hooded sweatshirt then put the described gloves. He then started to put the mask on the lower half of his face. The officers watched as he approached the store and intercepted him as he was about to commit his "sixth" Armed Robbery. The officers arrested him and found a Black handgun in his pocket which tuned out to be a BB-Gun.

Detectives from the Major Crime Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda are working on these Armed Robberies and are tying him into all five. Employees were able last night to ID his for one.

Arrested in this case was ...
Tyrone Bryant age 47 of 125 Andrew Street, Springfield, MA
charges ...
1) Attempted Armed Robbery
2) Possession Of Deceptive Device During Violent Crime (Mask)

Mr. Bryant was held on high bail overnight and will be arrainged in Springfield District Court today. I am not releasing his mugshot yet because the Detectives are still showing it to other potential victims. Picture is enclosed of mask and gun.

This was an outstanding arrest by two outstanding police officers who's attention to detail and professionalism resulted in an arrest before any violence could take place. At the same time potentially solving five Armed Robberies and getting a violent suspect off the streets. Kudos guys!!
