RECEPTACLE FIRE SCORCHES HOME
News Release from Sweet Home Fire Dist.
Posted: August 24th, 2016 6:33 PM
At 4:06 pm this afternoon Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District was dispatched to a possible house fire at 1141 43rd Avenue. They arrived to find the home owner using a garden hose to douse the remnants of a fire that started in a disposal receptacle and had begun to burn the outside of the home. He stated that he had gone outside and found his garbage and yard debris receptacles engulfed in flames up against his house. He grabbed his garden hose and began to spray water on the fire as someone else called 911.
The fire damaged the exterior cement siding and a window on the west side of the residence. The fire is believed to have started from some rags and cardboard in the receptacle that were used to clean up deck stain earlier in the day. The cement siding and the home owner's quick reaction were contributing factors in the stop of fire spread.
This event serves as a reminder that care should be taken when disposing of rags used to clean wood stains and treatment oils. With linseed oil and other oils used to finish wood, including some exterior deck sealers and wood stains, heat is generated during the drying process. This heat is a result of oxidation and will cause spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion of oil soaked rags can be avoided by following these steps: 1)Immerse item(s) in water in a metal container and seal with an air tight lid. 2) After soaking in water, allow item(s) to fully air dry by laying FLAT on a non-combustible surface. (Be sure to air dry safely away from any buildings or other combustible items.) 3)Once air dry, the item can be safely stored or discarded.
WPD SEES UPTICK IN TELEPHONE SCAMS
News Release from Woodburn Police
Posted: August 24th, 2016 12:11 PM
The Woodburn Police Department has recently seen an uptick in telephone scams involving iTunes gift cards. The scam artists have called victims in Woodburn and claimed to either be from the IRS or that the person called has won a cash prize. In each case, the victims were directed to purchase iTunes gifts cards and then give the gift card codes from the cards to the suspects over the phone.
The WPD cautions residents to not fall for this scam or other similar scams and to remind them that government agencies do not direct people to purchase gift cards. Those who get contacted or suspect a scam should hang up the phone and call the government agency themselves or their local police department.
The Woodburn Police Department also cautions citizens not to fall for anyone advising they are a prize winner where the "winner" has to pay money or make other purchases to redeem their prize.
Contact the WPD at 503-982-2345 for more information.

BE THE EYES AND EARS TO HELP CURB ARSON FIRES
News Release from Oregon Dept. of Forestry
Posted: August 23rd, 2016 4:05 PM
Oregon's wildland fire agencies typically battle fires started by lightning or by people's carelessness. But in recent weeks, they've found themselves chasing down fire starts set by arsonists. Dozens of wildfires have broken out in recent weeks across Oregon -- many of them under suspicious circumstances.
Law enforcement and wildfire protection agencies at all levels are working hard to solve these crimes and prevent future arsons. Vigilance is high among Oregon State Police troopers, county sheriff's deputies, and state and federal forestry agencies' field personnel. Oregon's forests are expansive -- 30 million acres -- and they could use the public's help to put a stop to this rash of deliberately set fires.
Thousands of recreationists enjoying the forests this summer can serve as eyes and ears to report suspected illegal activity in the woods. Call the Oregon State Police Tip Line, 503-375-3555, to confidentially report tips.

Posted: August 22nd, 2016 11:19 AM
On August 21, 2016, at 3:22 pm Corvallis Police Department officers responded to 3516 SE Bayou Place after a female resident reported a door-to-door magazine salesman touched her in an offensive manner and made sexually suggestive statements to her. The suspect, 20-year-old Laderrick McCray of Mississippi, came to the victim's residence as an employee of an out of state magazine sales company. McCray was very pushy and flirtatious, and led the victim from the doorway of her residence by putting his arm around her lower back. He then insisted that she let him come inside the residence, which she refused to do. His demeanor and comments made the victim uncomfortable and concerned for her personal safety.
McCray ultimately left the residence after the female returned inside her house, locked the door, and called police. 920 KSHO shared Jefferson Fire District's post.
On Friday August 19, 2016 at 3:34 p.m. Jefferson Fire District was dispatched to a high risk grass fire at 2232 NE Millersburg Drive, Albany Oregon. Upon arriv...al Incident Commander, Jon Zeilman saw that the fire was approximately 1/2 acre and was within a few feet of a barn and a house. The fire quickly escalated to a third alarm fire. High winds blowing towards the structures made it very difficult in fighting the fire. Firefighters were unable to save the barn however they did save the house. The outside wall of the garage did receive some damage. There was also a chicken coop with two chickens. One chicken named Penelope has been located and is doing well. They are still trying to locate the other chicken. The home is owned by John and Barbara Irish. The fire quickly moved around the house and down the field until firefighters were able to stop the fire. It appears that the fire started from a spark near the railroad tracks. Albany, Tangent, Scio, and Turner were also dispatched to assist with the call.
The fire was deemed under control at 5:19 p.m. Crews continue to mop up for several hours after.
There were no injuries to firefighters.
Thank you to all the firefighters who were fighting the fire in the over 100 degree weather!
