I have with me Doctor Vicki Kraft, the director of Center for Disease Control, and also Karen Weston, the chief executive, The Department of Education. We have another case of Covid- 19 in the Northern territory this time in a small child under the age of two, but it's important to reassure the community. This is not community transmission. This is the case of an extended family trying to care for and manage loved ones returning from overseas amongst these health emergency, so the initial case became symptomatic and the extended family all became close contacts and have quarantined. I must This family has done everything right and they have followed all the guidelines at the time. This child is the second family member to be diagnosed from this close. Contact Family Group in the same family group. There are two school age children. We will only comment on positive cases, No other family members have tested positive to date, so we have a situation where we now have three contacts from the same family group that have tested positive to cover 19 in the Northern territory the time. That does not put the school community at risk and education will speak to that the only linkage these children have to school is that they are enrolled, but once they became a close contact, they did not attend school and I think that is important to reassure the community. The family have done everything they can. This is just a case of managing loved ones returning from overseas and extended family group. We are thinking of them. They now have three family members all diagnosed with covered 19, but they are being cared for by our health staff and we wish them a speedy recovery. I also wanna. Shore territories These are not cases of community transmission. We know the source of the initial covid- 19 case. These are close contacts that have transmitted the disease as much as they have tried not to do so. so I wanna reassure Terrence what territories what we are doing is working the physical distancing the quarantining, the tough measures that we've put in place where people are going into force quarantine at the hand, washing everything that everyone is doing is playing apart and we are not seeing that community transmission and we need to keep that up. I'd be happy to take questions. And as I said, I've also got Karen and Vicky here. so if you have a question for them, please let us know and we'll direct the question. So someone has come back. Household and someone's Previously and then a child has been really helpful. So this is we have extended family. we have an initial case, which was from overseas return traveler they had one close contact already diagnosed that was an adult and then now we have one of the children under the age of two that has been diagnosed the initial close contact with the woman that we heard about yesterday right that's correct. That's it's just the one child that's yes and we will as we have been doing. we have been sharing with the community. those positive cases. we do need to respect the privacy of of our health patients but the rest of the family is so far well and we wish them all a speedy recovery. What's the condition? I don't have that clinical detail the child is with their mother and being careful they have to come in. At my understanding is that they are in the care of hospital staff already and I know we've got a visitor restrictions on people in hospital and of course people that do have current virus. How does that apply When you when you put a child they they get access to their hero and we were very very clear in terms of the visitor restrictions into World Darwin Hospital and the Alice Springs Hospital. we of course would make exemptions for pediatric patients. of course we need to respect Covid- 19. We don't wanna see people getting unwell and catching it potentially and so the quarantine for the. Protocols are in place from a health perspective, but this child will be well cared for and have access to their parents. Healthy testing anymore. Household House perhaps, but we'll be following the the clinical testing criteria. It's important for people to understand that that we have the testing criteria we will listen to the clinicians and test upon their advice and I had to Vicky to provide further detail. But this is just to say that we with each case, we make sure that we identify all the close context and the close contacts are put in quarantine and they're asked to self monitor themselves for any symptoms or signs of of the disease So if on a daily basis there they're contacted and if they report any symptoms that are suggested they are tested. Any other questions, Yes, can you tell us which school was about perhaps we could ask education too. Thank you. so so the school is Leanna Primary School and this child is attending. So so the last day the student attended was the 20 -fifth, and it was just a half day of attendance, not might not be a child under two, the school age children, so it's the best siblings. Yes, yes I think that's a question for health. Just to reassure the community, obviously parents would be very anxious to hear that there has been a connection to their school, possibly but for the school community of Leonia, this family did the right thing they were following the quarantine guidelines and as soon as they had that close family member come become symptomatic of those children did not attend school. so the risk to our school community is very very low, but as a parent myself, of course, those people will be anxious and information is being shared with the school community from the Department of Education again reminding that we extended the testing around teachers emergency service workers Professionals aged care workers so just to reassure our teachers and it's it's a timely reminder for all of us. be very attentive to your health. If you're not feeling well immediately, self quarantine yourself don't go about your business and then later reflect upon it and think actually I probably was symptomatic at this point. so it's a reminder to all of us to look after our health and being tuned with it. but to that school community at the risk, I'm advised by health professionals is very low. Will there be any specific like what specific advice might be given to say the teacher or the class of that child? so this. there was a briefing between education and health to make sure that to all of the Department of Education's questions were answered. did we need to put in place any measures, but that child has not been at school since they were potentially in contact with the symptom symptomatic relative so the risk is very very low. we're going back a week and a half now so the school as I said, we'll be informing the school community but there is no additional measures that health of advice that need to be undertaken of the parents of the kids. in terms of that is not necessary, what needs to happen is that our health trace the close contacts. they do that in terms of education, they're sharing the information with that school community in an appropriate manner, and this is our first child patient. is there any particular concerns or I mean there has been reports that children actually have generally okay with this fire. So it's less serious. We know where this case of Covid- 19, came from sadly for this family, It's an extended family group. There is no community transmission around Corona virus in Territory, but it's not a time for us to become complacent. We need to make sure that we're following all those measures. the government has put in place in force quarantine with tough penalties for people but breach that and so we all need to be in terms of what I was speaking about before hand washing quarantining if we become unwell making sure that we have that physical distancing, they're the measures that the community needs to keep acting upon any other questions for the Minister for Vicki Karen just in terms of gathering to sorry ladies if they find. Having 10 extra people over to the House, the fun at the moment, $1100 is up to do anything crazy stuff that people getting the message on understanding under the Chief health officer that there is penalties up to 400 penalty units, which is around 60 - $2000 so I think that that group will certainly have got a strong message that by breaking the rules, you will get it will catch up with you. You will get fined there is tough penalties in place and they will be used if people do the wrong thing maybe Yup. Yeah, I just wanted to ask like what Yeah, how will grow down hospital deal with different child case? so they're different things that need to be considered as opposed to an adult patients Well, they will be looking at the needs of the child. as as all patient needs are I looked after and as has been referred to they will have access to their parents and obviously, however, PPE will be or safeguarding the people who come in contact with the child will be attended to ask is the child the child is I would had smiled to sleep.
