My parents and my grandparents were sort of like almost offended by the privileges of my generation and I heard the stories like boy you don't know what it was like to grow up poor. I was so poor. I couldn't afford to be poor. I was just pull peel. I couldn't afford those two letters I had this black folks in my family that wanted to ground me in the truth of this nation. How far we've come and as I was told as a boy you drink deeply from Wells of freedom and Liberty and opportunity you didn't did you eat lavishly from banquet tables prepared for you by your ancestors and you can't sit here and get dumb fat and happy just consuming all your blessings You have an obligation and I'll tell you my parents were not impressed. My grandparents were not impressed. I graduated from Stanford here in the Bay area. I got my Masters I met I met Garcetti out at Odd University and and came back with the yellow school when I graduated from my father looks at me and goes boy. You got more degrees in the month of July, but you ain't hot Life isn't about the degrees you get. It's about the service you get I remember that law school graduation. My grandfather came over to my grandfather is this incredible man who got out of poverty by migrating as black stain from the South? He got a job on the Assembly minds. He was a W worker one of the earliest blacks on that Assembly line He fought hard and help to usher this nation into generations of opera Maybe that indeed seemed unrealistic to him now he would come up to be graduation and first try to make fun of me. He go boy. I see you in Magna cum laude or summa cum laude. You're just thank you laude. I'm outta here And then he give me this look that I knew he was getting serious where he would say very intently What you were doing right now was a dangerous Dream for my generation. We've grown up the one day. I have a grandchild doing what you're doing but it was a dangerous Dream but we dreamed we dropped anyway As I was here to speak Californians, I talked a lot about the Dream and I wanna I wanna get there but I want you to know that I love this party because my grandfather taught me too and and black folks like my grandfather they weren't born Democrat. They were born Republicans and what are my grandfather flip over? Why did he bragged the day? He died in Detroit him converting 14 district. That's what he always told me. I went out door to door converted 14 districts total turn Lincoln's picture to the to the Wall we're going with Democrats we're going with Dr because every time my dad granddad talked about this party It wasn't about the donkey. I don't know why the hell we have that as our it wasn't because it was a social club is because he believed the Democrats were fighting for the American values that were important to our family. It was the party of we not the party of me It was a party of workers rights It was a party to cared as much about the people sit down and have the fancy meal as a people right now In the kitchen getting ready to wash the dishes were eating from It was the party that fought for the minimum wage. It was a party that fought the labor movement. It was a party of civil rights and women's rights It was a party of social security and the party of Medicaid and Medicare It was a party of inclusion, not the party of exclusion This is what the Democratic Party was about to my family and your families and this to me is what America is about and and I have Say I get in trouble cuz I said this on the campaign trail a lot as I said, I hear the posters and the pundits saying the most important thing Democrats want is to just beat Donald Trump Well I live in an inner city community that's been struggling for a long time and people on my Street. If you said that to them that say damn, can't we have bigger aspirations and just beaten Donald Trump beating Donald Trump is the floor It's not the ceiling being Donald Trump This is out of a Valley but we are Democrats because we wanna get to the mountain top and let me tell you right now We are in a moral moment in America with the very ideals of our nation or at stake we have 3000 jurisdictions in America where children have more than twice. The blood led levels of Flint, Michigan What's going on before Donald Trump We have a nation right now where people in my community after years of fighting for workers rights were stripping the dignity from work cuz I people on my block that work longer hours in my parents and I still see them at our supermarket using food stamps to feed their family We have a nation As a criminal Justice system, I see in my community that turns so many African Americans into it because there's no difference between blacks and whites for using drugs or dealing drugs But 2017, we had more marijuana arrests than we did all violent crimes combined and disproportionately affecting low income people disproportionately affecting so many black folks that now we have more black folks under criminal supervision today than all the slaves in 1860 - five. This was going on before And Eric said it I'm watching my kids go back to school where we are competitive plating to fear and say we can't protect you the strongest nation on the planet Earth So we're gonna teach you how to hide how to shelter in place and as the public pays attention to these savage Mass shootings people are being shot in communities like mine and Philly and Chicago Every single day and folk don't seem to care about Chad Smith or was in Miller of the people dying This is a Oral moment in America and it's a referendum not on one guy in one office It's a referendum on us on who we are and who we must be to each other We know what King said that we have to repent for in this day and age. It's not just the vitriolic words and violent actions of the bad people but the appalling silence and inaction of the good people The opposite of injustice of the opposite of Justice is not injustice. It's apathy. It's in difference and that's why we, as Democrats like my grandfather's generation going out there door to door organizing people talking about what we stand for why we fight who we will defend and how we will move Nation Ford This isn't just Democratic issues This is not just a moment for us to talk about beating Republicans In this moral moment, we need to talk about uniting Americans again to new American majority to reclaim those things that hell. Even Democrats in Republicans agree on But we become so partisan and their party has become so dominated by hate mongers and if you pull Obamacare, they're not for it. But when you pull a pre-existing condition when you pull your kids stay on your health insurance and your 20 - five hell even if when you pull to the health care be a right for all Americans, those things pull off This is a time that is going to test the character of our country and I am so proud of the folks in this room that know as much as the public wants to focus on who's gonna be the next President We know what we need right now is not a savior in the White House The salvation we're looking for look is from rooms like this It's for my ancestors and yours who are willing to die for voting rights to be beaten from voting rights from the Edmond Pettis Bridge to Goodman, Chaney and shorter who died for the right to vote This is Election that we know we see what they're doing Their hope is to suppress African American votes to suppress the vote of poor folks This is an election where we see right wing judges trying to allow corporate money to pour and pollute our politics This is an election where you see folks trying to Jerry man because they can't win an election where every voter counts equal and and So this is a moral moment where our democracy is at stake and you can't take a democracy back by elected one person one office This is gotta be a time where we all commit ourselves to getting folk woke to getting people off the sidelines to telling folks that this is not a time to curl up or to shut up or to give up This is the time to stand up to rise up to lift other folk up so we can take back not just the White House so we can get Mitch Mcconnell out of that Decision that he's holding So we can build bigger majorities in the House so we can take back state legislatures take back statehouses take back governors seats so that we can begin to fight to make this democracy reflect our highest ideals and our highest values and so I wanna end the way I am the left end of the last time. I spoke out here in the Bay air to the California Democratic part You see it was one of my earliest elections first time Running for major office, it was a tough election. They made a documentary about it called Street Fight and and I was like the movie got nominated for an Oscar, but then loses to a movie called March of the Dam Penguins I'm a vegan and Al animal lover but damn those Penguins It was in the Middle of that fight the toughest fight then in my life that my grandfather died but you all know this death can end a life but it can end the love Death can end a life but it can't end the legacy Death can end a life, but it can't end the lessons that we must learn My grandfather believed and dangerous dreams He would tell Democrats right now. This is not a time to modulate ourselves. It's not a time to play it safe This is a time to be defiant in our dreaming. This is a time to be bold to be courageous. This is the time that we need leaders plural that can inspire people engage people lift folks up to be the best of who we are not the worst when a man tried to drag us into the gutter That's not how you beat demigods. We didn't beat Bull Connor by bringing bigger dogs and bigger fire hoses We beat him by artists of activism who The moral imagination of this nation He would take me back time and time to Dream and end that way You wanna talk about legacy. You wanna talk about love go to where King was slaying and you see right there written a first time I saw it. I got chills that it's not a tribute to King that they wrote right there on a block. It's a challenge to us It's actually words from scripture but it has nothing to do about religion It has to do with our civic gospel has to speak Us at the time that we need a revival of civic grace we need to end the empathy at the impotency of our empathy time that we need to understand that patriotism is love of country but you can't love your country unless you love your fellow country men and women And so what's the gospel, the civic gospel they chose to right there. It's a words of Joseph Brothers that when when they went to go kill Joseph with his coat of many colors that Dream interpreter they grabbed him and they threw him into a pit to die but he didn't die in He rolls on up and he led a nation through crisis It was Egypt So here we are my brothers and sisters are nation is in the pit We know we're in the pit because even the songs we sing our National anthem home of the brave and or our veterans are disproportionately homeless. We know we're in a pit because somewhere tonight there's somebody who can't come to a dinner like this because they don't know how they even gonna make the ends meet the next day. They're they're public school teachers going to school this month who who are who don't know how they're gonna pay their debt but they reach into their pockets and still pay for things Kids need cuz we still have 20 percent of our kids born in poverty We're in a pit We have a criminal Justice system that treats you better as Brian Stevenson says. If you're rich and guilty than if you're poor and innocent So what was the challenge to our generation was simply this They wrote right there. The words of Joseph's Brothers behold here coming to the dreamer Let us slay him and see what becomes of the Dream This is the moment the moral moment. This is the election that we must answer that question as every generation has what will become of the Dream. Will it become diminished will become diluted Will it become divided against itself Or will we in our generation like our ancestors before stand up and Dream again say I too Dream America a new idrink, bold dreams and dangerous dreams I Dream to find dreams and if we as Democrats Or willing to back those dreams up with sweat and work and sacrifice and struggle then we can make sure that this nation does not perish in the pit that we like the ancestors before us and tougher times and harder times that we want our nation is down low and trying to be dragged down by demagogues and bigots and hate mongers We can make sure that from that point that we do rise Thank you Ladies and gentlemen please welcome Senator Elizabeth Warren Hello, Jim Cruz Hello It is good to be here with you tonight so I think we all know what's ahead of us in 2020 We have a job to do beat Donald Trump But I'll be honest that's not enough This moment requires more than being not Trump a country that elect someone like Donald Trump is a country that is already in serious danger Yup And we can't expect to win by ignoring the problems that dot Donald Trump elected in the first place for us to win win the White House and win up and down the ticket We must lay out our vision for this nation We must show America that we understand what is broken and that we will provide the big structural changes that will make our government our economy And our country work for everyone We must give Americans a reason to vote for us right here right now during this primary we have that chance to lay out our vision We have that chance to define what it means to be a Democrat We have that chance to show what it means for Democrats to lead this country So today I thought I would tell you a little bit about what kind of Democrat I am Right now in this economy we have a democracy fit. No longer works for the American people and I'm not talking about you know there's one regulation here. That's a problem. One law over there. That's a problem The entire structure of our system is tilted to prop up the rich and the powerful and leave everyone else behind big any issue you care about and it is painfully obvious tax breaks and loopholes favored the rich environmental Relations benefit drillers and polluters the criminal Justice system destroys millions of families and tears apart communities of color The racial wealth gap holds back families generation after generation and the list goes on student debt. The cost of health care, housing child care We face enormous challenges in this country but all of these challenges are related these problems Are fundamentally about power power that is concentrated in the hands of a small number of the wealthy and well-connected power that is concentrated in the hands of giant corporations power that is used to benefit a thinner and thinner slice at the top and kick dirt in the face of everyone else That is wrong It is fundamentally UN American and I'm running for President in 2020 because it's our chance to turn that around Now some Democrats in Washington believe the only way forward is to make change incrementally a few tweaks here. Some nudges there No this is a time of crisis and when you are in crisis when your back is up against the Wall the last thing you do is back down from the big fights So I'm here tonight with a message for Democrats This is not the time for small ideas If we're gonna clean up corruption in Washington if we're gonna build an economy that works for everyone if we're gonna save our democracy then we need to be the party of vision The party of big structural change to make that vision real And yeah I got a plan for that So here it is when I'm President we will pass the biggest anti corruption plans since water gate It's time we will end lobbying as we know it Oh and here's a good way to root out corruption We will make everyone everyone who runs for federal office post their tax returns online Stay with me here we will break up big ad We will break up big banks and we will break up big tech I'll check you on that one We will make it easier for workers to join a Union And now we will pass a wealth tax It's time So just to tell everyone how this works your first 50 million dollars in wealth is free and clear But for the 50 millions and first dollar you got a pitch in two cents You too. Sands you bad And two cents for every dollar after that and just so you're all clear on this that affects the top one tenth of one percent in this country They can afford to sense And here's the deal What can we do with Two cents or two cents We can do so much in this country Universal child care for every baby in this country. Age zero to five Universal pre K for every three year old and four year old in this country Higher wages for every preschool teacher and child care worker in America two cents we can do all of that and for that same two cents we can also make College free and increased Pell grants so that access to College is real even for kids whose families are struggling Plus wicked level the playing field by putting 50 billion dollars into our historically black colleges and University And one more we can do all of that and we can cancel stood alone. Debt for 90 -, five percent of the folks who When I leave the Democratic Party, we will not be a party that nibbles around the edges Our Democratic party will be the party of big structural change This has been my fight pretty much forever to fight for opportunity I grew up out in Oklahoma and a paycheck. oh I got some cookies Yes there aren't that many of us especially that many Democrats but we're working on it but I grew up in a in a paycheck to paycheck family and my daddy He ended up as a janitor but his baby daughter got the opportunity to become a public school teacher. Can we hear it for our public school teachers And here's the thing about public school teachers We aren't afraid and we don't give up That's the deal So I see this as a fight of our lives but I come to you with a heart full of optimism Look I get it Donald Trump and his cronies have a strategy to hang on to power divide us up into as many factions as possible pit White people against black people straight people against trans people Christians against Muslims Class families against Native American families and everyone against immigrants at least black and Brown immigrants now if world fighting each other Trump hopes no one will notice that he and his crooked cronies are scooping up more and more of our country's great wealth and leaving less and less for everyone else but it isn't going to work And I say that because I've seen it firsthand as I travel the country I've met the people who are ready to fight back against Donald Trump's hateful vision I've met millions of grassroots Democrats who are ready to fight millions of independence who are ready to fight shoot I've been doing selfies with Republicans who are ready to fight But they need a leader They don't need someone to say oh settle down back up. There's nothing to be angry about They don't need someone to say let's just turn back the clock They don't need someone to say it's all just too hard They need a leader who is not afraid I am not afraid I am in this fight because I believe the nation of our best dreams is within reach We just need the courage to stand a little stronger and fight a little harder for what we believe in The rich and the powerful have been calling the shots in Washington for far too long but they're influence isn't felt just in the Oval Office in the halls of Congress in States across this country Democracy itself is under attack corruption voters, suppression racist voter ID laws, Mass incars ration attacks on trans women and attacks on unarmed black men attacks Indigenous brothers and sisters and attacks on immigrant families attacks on women's access to health care and attacks on anyone who dares to cross the R and it's all happening at the state level So here's how I see it if we're gonna make real change then we must help Democrats win in federal and state races Last year I was running for reelection but I didn't hold back I got in the fight to support A hundred and 30 Democrats running for Congress and over 30 Senate candidates I also got in the fight to help almost 20 gubernatorial candidates and a whole lot of state party officers. In fact I raised or gave more than 11 million dollars, helping get Democrats elected up and down the ballot In this country And one of the things meant the most to me is iced contributions to all 50 state parties to the National committees and to everyone of the redistricting fights Because understand this for me this race isn't just about 2020 It's about the changes we need to make in 2020 - one and beyond and we can do that only if we build a grass So I've been doing this for about seven and a half months I've already been to 26 States plus Puerto Rico I've taken nearly 50000 selfies and a meeting voters face to face because I think that's what it takes to build a grassroots movement When I lead the Democratic Party we will be a party of moral clarity a party of courage We will be a party that says we are the wealthiest nation in the history of the world So yes we can afford Medicare for all to save our people and a Green new deal to save our planet We are a party that believes no one is above the law, not even the President of the United States But most importantly we will be a party with the courage to Dream big with the courage to fight hard Dream big fight hard That's how we're gonna win Thanks Ladies and gentlemen please welcome back to the stage D and C chair Tom Perez Hey, thank you very much folks for coming I told you we have a deep bench. You knew that you saw that and I simply ask you as you prepare to take off Remember that
