Blessed to be in this ecumenical gathering in celebration on this MLK day...ready to be challenged to keep his work moving forward and to be faithful to each of God-given call. Rev. Dr. Martin Childs, Jr, Pastor of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church (host church of the 2018 ABC Wisconsin Annual Gathering -Oct. 12-13.)
Luke 2:15 (NRSV)
Was it something supernatural that compelled the shepherds to get up and go...
or simply human curiosity?
Was it a deep desire--or need--for something out of the normal daily grind,
something that might have changed the trajectory of their otherwise predictable lives?
For whatever reason, God's glorious announcement of "good news" was revealed to the shepherds. Though this cause for "great joy" was "for all people," the shepherds were especially positioned to be in perfect earshot and sight-line to...well, notice. (1)
They noticed, and they responded. The rest is history, as they say.
Yet it is more than history.
Wonderment, curiosity, the opportunity to respond to that which reveals the glory of God and the 'good news' are all around us today--in the open fields and the quaint towns and the bustling cities.
This verse, Luke 2:15, of the Christmas story particularly jumped out to me as I remembered our beloved regional family. And I prayed that the Lord will make known to us, too...
...deep-rooted hurts and joys impacting our faith
...paths of collaboration that lead to unifying love
...areas parched for spiritual growth and those ready for harvest
...realities in need of God's lasting transformation and those already transformed
and I prayed that there will be those among us who will notice
and will say, "Let us go now and see this thing that has taken place."
and I prayed that we, too, we will respond.
There are many yet who need this good news of joy for all people; many yet who know the Christmas story but have not learned how to treasure it in their hearts.
On this Christmas morning, I wish you all the spirit and the faithfulness of the shepherds as we cherish the final days of 2017 and stand ready for all that God has in store for us in the new year.
Merry Christmas with love,
Marie and family
