Interesting article on audiences - should our theatre audiences be less uptight?

The idea of a quiet, polite audience wherein a cough elicits scorn from those around you is more or less a fairly recent one. Shakespeare's audiences were definitely disruptive; they shouted, stood, ate and drank - even the Greeks. Has the culture of cinema-going - sitting idly in a dark auditorium, and not an integral part of the action - brought about a level of expectation in our theatre audiences? Should we accept that audiences are a crucial part of the theatrical experience? How much do performers feed off of their audiences' reactions? Could lively audiences become a distraction?

‘Relaxed’ performances, aimed at people with disabilities and their carers, are few and far between – but they have benefits for all theatregoers

Preparing for our first lecture as visiting artists on DMU's Performance Practices MA course tomorrow evening. We will be doing a whistle-stop tour of some of the processes we have used in our practice when engaging with digital media. Next stop, BA Performance and Interactive Technologies.
