Join Americans for Refugees & Immigrants on May 15th at 8:30am to rally against the Muslim Ban and anti-refugee, anti-immigrant sentiment outside the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (the William K. Nakamura Courthouse) 1010 Fifth Ave Seattle, WA 98104.
This hearing will decide whether the travel ban will continue to be stymied or if it will continue to go into effect. Our rally has been endorsed by ACLU of Washington, Oxfam, Truman National Security Project's Seat...tle Chapter and International Rescue Committee in Seattle.
We stand for an America that welcomes refugees and immigrants and protects vulnerable communities. We should all strive for an America that recognizes the dignity and humanity of all people, and the right to lawful due process. We call on the adminstration to abolish these detrimental executive orders that are unfairly targeting the Muslim, immigrant and refugee communities, and ultimately hurting not only innocent people, but damaging our national standing on the global stage.
We will be meeting in front of the William K. Nakamura Courthouse in Seattle one hour before the hearing where we will be showing our support to rescind these executive orders. The hearing will begin at 9:30 am. Feel free to bring your own signs. We are also planning on arranging a short program of speakers at our event.
Background info on the case (State of Hawaii, et al. v. Trump AKA “Travel Ban”):
On March 15, 2017, Judge Derrick Watson (Hawaii) indefinitely halted the President’s second Executive Order also known as the travel ban citing the order as unconstitutional religious discrimination based on Trump's election campaign promise of "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
The travel ban restricts immigration from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen, and also suspended refugee admissions. If Judge Watson's halt is defeated, this unconstitutional, and short-sighted travel ban will again be instated as policy. This issue, the legality of the travel ban, may well end up in the Supreme Court.
While we can celebrate this victory, the case is not over.
On May 15th, 2017 the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will have a choice as they examine the legality of the executive order. The government will ask them to look away from the extraordinary evidence, including many statements from the president and his aides, that the order is an attempt to make good on the president’s promised Muslim ban.
The plaintiffs will urge each court to refuse — as the court in Hawaii put it — to “crawl into a corner, pull the shutters closed, and pretend it has not seen what it has.” Because these appeals courts have the power to block or allow the Muslim ban, the path they choose may determine its fate.
The country and the world will be watching.
