Opportunity for young people in Perth, WA.

Lewis Price,a Project Officer with the Youth Affairs Council of WA (YACWA) – the peak body for young people and the youth sector. His role is to support the Youth Disability Advocacy Network (YDAN). He has contacted ASAN with this information:

"One of several key deliverables is to engage young people with disability to deliver workshops and 'experiential audits' for organisations in both metropolitan and regional WA.

…

This is so that lived experiences are at the forefront of our engagement, and the workshops/audits ultimately serve to build awareness and inclusion of the wants and needs of young people with disability.

The Executive Committee of YDAN has asked me to reach out to your organisation and ask if you could help us get in touch with some of your young members (preferably aged 17-25, inclusive) in Western Australia.

We would greatly appreciate their assistance with the development of our programs through a guided consultation process that would take approximately 1-2 hours.

We want to be as consultative as possible with the community and ensure that our programs factor in as much input as possible from people with various disabilities.

We'd love to invite two of your chosen young members to attend our facilitated consultation session of approximately 5 people in total (3 from Down Syndrome WA).

We can offer a $20 gift card (of their choosing) for their time, and some light food and drink would be provided.

There would also be time set aside at the start of the session for the young people to learn more about YDAN and its activities in the hopes that, should we build capacity to allow for it, we potentially engage them to deliver aforementioned workshops/audits on behalf of YDAN, and they would be remunerated for it."

At this stage, the event is for people living in Perth. Engagement processes for people in other areas is being developed now and ASAN has agreed to promote this to our membership.

As there can only be 2 delegates, I invite interested people to submit a paragraph or short video of a maximum of 100 words to explain why they feel they could represent their Autistic peers. ASAN welcomes diversity in representation and can assist in ensuring that appropriate accommodations are provided.

"Wrongly assuming that someone is not socially motivated can have devastating consequences. Being sociable is widely considered to be a fundamental part of being human. The presumption that autistic people are not sociable effectively dehumanizes them."
