NSA Political Leader Nirvan Maharaj: Proper consultation with all stakeholders should be done, before the Property Tax is implemented in its current form.

In the time being, he wants the Government to immediately withdraw the impending Property Tax and revert to the old system.

PRESS RELEASE
April 21, 2017

The Political Leader of the National Solidarity Assembly is calling on the Government to immediately withdraw the impending Property Tax and revert to the old system, until proper consultation is done with all stakeholders regarding the mechanisms to ensure proper safety, security, valuation, confidentiality and most importantly equality of treatment amongst all property owners in Trinidad and Tobago.

...

There is no doubt in my mind, that this impending Property Tax by the Government, seems to be a systematic and organized attempt to engage in a subtle form of discrimination and unfair treatment of productive law abiding citizens who labour for years to build a life for themselves and their children, while supporting and propping up those individual who continuously depend on political patronage and handouts to survive.

The Government must ensure that the innocent must not pay for the guilty and there is equitable treatment of all property owners once they occupy property, whether by paper title ownership or squatting, or residing on state lands, tenanted lands, regularized or not.

To do differently is to send a message to our country that it is better to engage in criminality, and break the law, rather than work hard and sacrifice for what you desire. This type of message must never be allowed to flourish in our nation, because what is good for one must be good for all and productive law abiding citizens must be cherished and praised rather than brutalized and penalized for working hard for themselves and their children.

Yours sincerely,
NIRVAN MAHARAJ

PRESS RELEASE
April 19, 2017

The President General of the All Trinidad General Workers’ Trade Union, Nirvan Maharaj is calling on the Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries Clarence Rambharat to state exactly what is the status concerning the distribution of lands and leases to Ex-Caroni Workers and also the status of the infrastructural development of these lands.

...

Minister Rambharat is fully aware, being the Corporate Secretary at Caroni (1975) Ltd at the time of the shutdown, that these lands, agreed to by the then PNM Government are the legitimate Retrenchment and Severance Package of thousands of Ex-Caroni Workers, who are still waiting to get their VESEP package, almost thirteen years after the Sugar Industry was shut down.

We wish to remind the Minister that on assuming the portfolio of Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries he promised that in one year’s time, this long outstanding issue would be positively concluded. To date thousands of Ex-Caroni workers are still waiting for their residential and agriculture leases, while subsequent governments have continuously breached the Mandatory Court Order of the Deyalsingh Judgment of 2007 and the Consent Order of the Industrial Court of 2003.

In this time of economic downturn and an increasingly volatile industrial climate, this Nation, this Government, this Opposition and those in authority must not be allowed to forget that there are thousands of Ex-Caroni Workers waiting, not on a gift or a handout, but on a legal entitlement due to them by law.

There seems to be a stony silence by many non-governmental organizations and groups in this country, who speak of every issue and every other group, but who continuously turn a blind eye to the plight of the Ex-Caroni workers and the fact that they are waiting over thirteen years for a severance package, a clear violation of the rule of law; fairness and an abuse of the Industrial Relations process.

There is no doubt that no other group of people has been as unfairly treated in this country as the Ex-Caroni workers have been. Almost twenty-five percent have died, without having received what was due to them by law and even their children are unsure as to what is happening to the Retrenchment and Severance Package that is now beneficially due to them.

We are calling on Minister Rambharat and the Honourable Prime Minister to act now, to do the right thing and bring an end to the suffering, frustration and misery of this group of people, the Ex-Caroni Workers, who would have laboured, sometimes in the worst conditions, to serve our beloved nation, to survive and to build a life for their families.

Yours faithfully,
NIRVAN MAHARAJ

PRESS RELEASE
29th March, 2017

On behalf of the Membership, Executive, General Council and Staff of The National Solidarity Assembly and the All Trinidad General Workers Trade Union, I wish to extend our sincerest greetings and congratulations to the Spiritual Baptist community on the occasion of the Spiritual Baptist Holiday.

...

It is our duty and responsibility as a Nation to pay respect and homage to those who in spite of adverse conditions and even legislation designed to undermine their rights to freedom of worship, were able to rise above adversity and become an integral part of our society.

A community that like many others, is symbolic of the triumph of the human spirit and the determination and will, of human endevour to shine amidst darkness.

As we celebrate the achievements of the Spiritual Baptist Community, in the sphere of politics, economics, education, religion and culture, we offer our deepest congratulations to those who would have risen from the blood and struggle of their ancestors to become equal partners in the process of nationhood and nation building.

Yours sincerely,

PRESS RELEASE
17th March, 2017

The Political Leader of the National Solidarity Assembly (NSA) and President General of the All Trinidad General Workers’ Trade Union (ATGWTU) Mr. Nirvan Maharaj is expressing his full support by the initiative taken by the current Government Administration in seeking the assistance of former Attorney General, Senior Counsel Mr. Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj in order to help alleviate the escalating crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago.

...

It is truly good to see individuals in this country who regardless of personal political point of view or differences in the issue of governance can come together, united under the banner of Trinidad and Tobago in the interest of our Nation.

At the same time I am also calling on the Government to begin the Legislative and Constitutional Reform process to ensure that citizens have a right to defend themselves.

I am also once again calling for a one day extra ordinary sitting of Parliament to be observed as a United National Front Parliament, geared towards solving the heinous crime situation when our members of Parliament will sit not as a members of the PNM or the UNC, but as individuals representing the interest of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. It must be a discussion and not a debate.

I wish to reiterate that when the country is in crisis, the Opposition must not oppose for opposing sake or to satisfy their personal whims and fancies; and the Government must also not impose for imposing sake.

The soul of our Nation is at stake and we must unite to save it.

Yours sincerely,

UNITED NATIONAL FRONT PARLIAMENT

3rd March, 2017
PRESS RELEASE
UNITED NATIONAL FRONT PARLIAMENT

The Political Leader of the National Solidarity Assembly and President General All Trinidad General Workers Trade Union Nirvan Maharaj is again appealing to the Members of Parliament that for the sake of our beautiful Nation, now standing on the brink of a slippery slope, descending into a dark abyss of no return, to please unite at least once in our history, to assist each other in solving major issues facing ou...r country.

Now that the Carnival Season is over, and the harsh reality of a Nation divided and simmering with quiet discontent, stare us in the face, under the superficial surface of being a rainbow society and the “all of we are one” syndrome. We must unite on certain issues or perish divided.

We must not allow our beautiful Nation of Trinidad and Tobago to be sacrificed on the altar of pettiness and vindictiveness, our politicians must now, for the sake of Country, engage at this time in the concept of a United National Front Parliament, geared towards solving the heinous crime situation, rape, robbery, murder, a lack of safety and security, the domestic violence issues, schools that are falling apart, unemployment and retrenchment escalating, gangs running rampant, drugs, human trafficking, lack of safety and security and a sense of hopelessness and simply waiting for something to happen.

We again call on citizens to demand that their Elected Representatives provide better representation on major issues facing our country and not simply play politics with red herrings and idiotic grand standing meaning nothing. Members of Parliament must face the people who elected them and say what their personal points of views on issues are; there must be a day in Parliament when our Representatives must vote on conscience and discuss issues on conscience, such as crime, rather than self-interest and Party.

We must demand what is right, in the interest of our nation for the soul of our nation is at stake.

Yours sincerely,
NIRVAN MAHARAJ

PRESS RELEASE
23rd February, 2017

The President General of the All Trinidad General Workers’ Trade Union and Political Leader of the National Solidarity Assembly, Mr. Nirvan Maharaj is offering full support to Mr. Liaquat Ali in his call for the Agricultural Development Bank to be made a Commercial Bank facilitating the Agricultural Sector of Trinidad and Tobago.

...

There is no doubt that innovative ways must be found to stimulate the Agriculture Sector in order to assist in the diversification of the Economy and allow this sector to be the foundation upon which the diversification stands, especially in light of the fact that Trinidad and Tobago imports billions of dollars of food every year.

An idea such as this can allow for a more enabling agricultural environment, with the Agricultural Development Bank, operating on the basis of profit making, but with a flexibility based social conscience and understanding of the unique circumstances our agriculturalist sometimes have to undergo, e.g. natural disasters and surplus or reduced produce etc.

This will allow our people engaged in the Agricultural Sector to escape the trapping of sometimes unimaginable Bank charges and procedures that sometimes make financial assistant to those engaged in Agriculture almost impossible, more so when Farmers are on Tenanted Lands or fall within the realm of State Lands and Caroni VESEP Lands.

The time has come to ensure that the interest of the nation, more so food security is placed above seemingly myopic narrow minded business interest, geared only towards profit maximization by any means necessary.

The idea of Mr. Ali is indeed one that should be considered by those in Authority, and after a proper logistical study is done, the necessary legislative reform be put in place to give impetus to an idea, that if properly implemented, can help stimulate economic growth, ensure food security, create employment, make agriculture attractive to the young and ease the financial constraints facing our nation.

We are therefore calling on the Minister of Agriculture to begin immediate discussions with the Minister of Finance and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure that the process to give practical manifestation to this idea is dealt with in an expeditious manner.

Yours sincerely
