Rose Wilder Lane's book, THE PEAKS OF SHALA, is among her best writings. She felt an affinity for the folkways of the native people. In the caption to this photo, she reports that this Albanian woman brought jars of kos (a kind of yogurt) to the bazaar to sell, made by putting three sprigs of grape vine into the boiled milk.
Not an easy book to find, but worth reading for a closer look at Rose's political ideas, some of which emerge in the Little House books
This lovely article is one of the pieces Rose wrote for her book, THE WOMAN'S DAY BOOK OF AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK, published in 1962. It's a good example of the way she weaves her political philosophy into whatever she's writing.
