Oh how I wish I would have looked on here 24hrs ago!
  • Installing this tomorrow (Friday) but checking... The one damper doo...r on our 1.7 isn't in the closed position (this is straight out of the box) [whereas our 2.5 doors appear to be in closed position pre-installation] - is this okay? *Will the doors be okay once installed and powered?* We are installing both on vaulted ceiling areas, you previously recommended they be installed 'length-wise' so the doors open outwards/sideways rather than up/downwards on the vaulted ceiling. Is this still advised? See More
  • Just checking that the installation video over here: http://www.airs...capefans.com/video.php?id=installation for the 1.7 unit is a prior iteration - and the ethernet-looking wiring has replaced the need to hard-wire red/black/white wires - yes? See More

I installed a pair of the 1.7s in my house back in 2007 after learning the hard way--by installing, then removing, and returning--that the fans sold by the big-...box building supply store are like jet engines. The 1.7s were a fantastic investment, which dramatically reduced my A/C usage and were whisper quiet. Now in a new house and I am looking to get the same great results. See More

Our 2.5e arrived July 1, 2014, and I installed it almost immediately. The fan worked well, but the noise was much greater than expected or advertised. So I co...ntacted Neil several times about this issue.

I was advise to try a few things which I did, but didn't reduce the noise level enough so the final solution was for AirScape to send me an additional length of 20" diameter ducting; which I received late July 2014.

Not wanting to go into the attic again for a while, it took until June 22, 2015 to get up enough ambition to tackle the ducting modification. The modification took about 1.5 hours start to finish.

I moved the fan assembly about 8 feet from the previous location and made about two 90 degree duct turns (previously due to the attic configuration I was only able to get about one 80 degree duct turn). I attached the new ducting to both the original duct end and then to the fan assembly.

This combination of increasing the duct turn angle and moving the fan assembly further from the plenum made a lot of difference. See the results below:

Original Installation (Fan Speed & dB "C"):
1: 70
2: 74
3: 78
4: 88
5: 86

After a slight Location Modification (Fan Speed & dB "C"):
1: 56
2: 68
3: 70
4: 78
5: 82

After Duct & Location Modification (Fan Speed & dB "C"):
1: 54
2: 63
3: 65
4: 68
5: 70

After the final modification the noise output (70 dB "C") in the room on speed 5 (high) is equal to the original installation on speed 1 (slow) and medium speed 3 of the intermediate modification.

While I'm not that pleased with having to do a lot of stuff to get the fan noise to a "Relatively Quiet" level, I am pleased with both the result and the excellent after sale customer service.

Please see my August 14, 2015 update.

I have been installing these fans for years in the custom homes I build. The pro installer program manager was unprofessional during our correspondence. Good fans, but did not like the Air Scape representative.

This is a great article on the necessity of proper attic ventilation. A well sealed attic floor with good insulation, lots of attic venting, combined with an AirScape Whole House Fan is the best way to keep your house comfortable and your roof in good condition for years.

AirScape is extremely self sufficient. If we need something done, we generally do it ourselves. We even have our own photo studio!
