Alan Pierson, artistic director: "When I was 13, I was already super into "new music:" new movie scores, new musicals, new songs I was writing. But my first exposure to something akin to the "new music" I do now was at 14 when my school orchestra played music from Stravinsky's Firebird. My job was to cover the orchestra's missing parts on piano, and Stravinsky's bizarre harmonies kept making me think I was reading the score wrong. I was transfixed. Soon after that, I sang Bernstein's Chichester Psalms with my high school chorus, which is the first piece of new(ish) music I really fell in love with. When I asked my teacher to point me to more music along those lines, he led me Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, which I became obsessed with too. That obsession inspired me to spend a summer studying composition at Northwestern's High School Music Institute, where I was introduced to truly contemporary music by Professor Michael Pisaro. I remember being thrown in the deep end on the ferocious-seeming solo piano part to Prof. Pisaro's new concert band piece, as well as the class where Prof. Pisaro introduced us to Steve Reich's music, after which I spent hours pouring over the score of Tehillim, dreaming of one day performing it."

Christa Robinson, oboe: "At the age of 13, I was more in to baseball then anything else, and spent summer weekends traveling across Ontario with my family to tournaments. I had only just discovered what the oboe was. I'm not certain if my early baseball "career" led in any way to my love for new music, or performing with Alarm Will Sound, but I will happily play catch with anyone who brings their glove."
Bill Kalinkos, clarinet: "When I was 13, I really enjoyed playing the clarinet (and baseball). This is a picture of myself before middle school graduation with my dog, Najee. In her older years, she was actually part of an AWS performance of Benedict Mason's "The 5th Music" at Miller Theatre in 2004." Celebrate AWS at 13! www.alarmwillsound.com/support.php

Matt Marks, French horn/composer: "In eighth grade I was obsessed with two types of music: the classical music I listened to by myself and the 80s punk rock I listened to with my friends (as is evidenced by my super-cool Black Flag shirt). Now I make crazy music with my AWS friends that sorta connects these two very different worlds."
Congratulations to the students from the Community Music School of Webster University on a fantastic performance last evening! About twenty students joined AWS on stage at the Sheldon to make music by living composers. Thanks to the families, the audience, the people of the Sheldon and CMS!
Elisabeth Stimpert, clarinet: "When I was 13, I was into books more than anything else, especially the epic fantasy and alternate-reality worlds created by authors like Raymond E. Feist and Katherine Kurtz...the longer and more complicated the better. I'm still fascinated by complex stories and processes as they play out in all the different types of music we play." www.alarmwillsound.com/support.php
