Today I announced the establishment of a task force of prominent Canadians who will help advise our government on how to move forward in the fight to defend Alb...ertan jobs, Canadian jobs.
Task force members include former New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna, Former Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan, former Syncrude Canada president Jim Carter and noted legal scholar Peter Hogg.
We are here fighting for you, fighting for your jobs, for your families. This is a fight between BC and the working people of Canada and this is a fight we must not back down on.
Today in 1965, I.W. Abel was elected President of the USWA. Abel was instrumental in passage of landmark legislation such as OSHA and ERISA, the pension reform... act, and in reaching an Experimental Negotiating Agreement with major steel producers that curtailed nationwide strikes in return for guaranteed wage increases and cost-of-living adjustments. He also helped to guide the merger of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers with the USWA.
In 2012 explosions ripped through two BC mills caused by excessive wood dust levels. Four workers were killed, dozens injured and countless others scarred by th...e tragedies. Six years later, wood dust in forestry mills is still a problem. Mackenzie Pulp Mill Corp was recently fined $200,000 by the WCB for excessive levels of combustible wood dust “throughout the pulp mill…in locations close to ignition sources” It was a ”repeated and high-risk violation.” How little time it takes employers to forget the lessons of the past. Tougher fines and greater employer accountability are what’s required to make workplaces safer and level the playing field.
"Given the importance of Canadian investment in the Mexican mining sector, we are deeply concerned about the role of Canadian authorities in cases where communi...ties are struggling to protect their land and water from the negative impacts of Canadian mining operations."
Mexican community leader Mariano Abarca was killed in 2009 for fighting to defend human rights and the environment.
Mr. Abarca's son, along with supporting organizations from Mexico and Canada, including the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, filed a complaint with Canada's Public Sector Integrity Commissioner (PSIC) formally requesting an investigation into the embassy's acts and omissions. Read more: usw.to/2i5

Coroner's inquest makes 16 recommendations in death of a worker at a Vale. A joint investigation by #USW Local 6500 & the employer also produced 58 recommendati...ons that have now been implemented at the workplace. While these recommendations cannot reverse the death of Paul Rochette, they will hopefully improve health and safety conditions in the mine.
"For Paul's sake and everyone in the workforce, I hope these recommendations are adhered to, to the point where they become regulations," said Justin Stewart, Paul's former co-worker.
Mark your calendars: the Health Care Workers Conference will take place April 22-25 in Lexington, Ky. We have an exciting set of sessions planned, so we hope you and your local can make it! More information will be available in the coming weeks.
