ILSI North America Research Design Challenge

Pitch a research design idea at ASN NUTRITION 2018 to compete for a prize award.

Abstract due January 18, 2018

...

Non-essential bioactive dietary components may help maintain optimal health and reduce risk of chronic disease. Recommended intakes of bioactive dietary components should have solid evidence of safe use at efficacious levels. Such evidence will improve the confidence of regulatory bodies with product oversight and health professionals providing advice to the general public.

Efficacy studies are not designed to measure safety and typically report results in terms of subject’s adverse events or reasons for dropouts. However, evidence of safe use at efficacious levels could be greatly improved if safety related measures were proactively integrated and more thoroughly reported in clinical efficacy testing. Lower cost, highly efficient study designs are needed to increase collection of safety data as secondary measures integrated in clinical efficacy research.

Opportunity: Assemble and lead your own cross-functional team to develop a novel research design that meets the stated challenge objectives and then pitch it at NUTRITION 2018 (Jun 9-12, Boston). One team member must attend ASN’s NUTRITION 2018 meeting to make the pitch.

Post-Diagnosis Isoflavone and Lignan Intake in Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients

Isoflavones and lignans (phytoestrogens) are dietary components with potential anti-carcinogenic effects. Although the intake of isoflavones and lignans may affect breast cancer treatment and prognosis (and associations may differ by menopausal status), post-diagnosis intake data are limited.

...

In this study, the authors examining post-diagnosis isoflavone and lignan intake in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, comparing differences by menopausal status and phytoestrogen type.

The authors found that post-diagnosis lignan intakes from 3 high-lignan foods may be considerable among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, yet have been unassessed in previous prognostic studies. The inclusion of these foods in dietary assessment methods may improve future intake estimates and the distributions on which breast cancer survival analyses are based.

ASN Advocates for NO Tax on Graduate Student Tuition Waivers

Congressional leaders released the text and an explanation of the compromise tax legislation agreed to by the conference committee. In a major victory for the research community, the final version of the legislation does not include the proposal that was in the House bill to tax graduate student tuition waivers! Last week #ASN sent a letter opposing the graduate student tuition tax to all conferees and the House and... Senate leadership. Many thanks to the ASN members who responded to and shared the FASEB e-action alert on the tax bill. Over 22,000 emails were sent to Congress, reaching all 100 Senators and 414 House offices.

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced that the House will vote on the compromise tax bill on Tuesday, December 19. The timing of the Senate vote is uncertain at the moment. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Thad Cochran (R-MS) are currently away from the Senate dealing with health-related issues, although press reports indicate that both expect to be available for a vote on the tax bill sometime this week. Congressional leaders are hoping to send the final bill to President Trump before Christmas.

All of Us Research Program Needs Your Ideas!

Can you help researchers better understand why some people get sick or stay healthy? If so, we need your ideas to help make the All of Us Research Program the best resource it can be to support future research.

The All of Us Research Program, led by the National Institutes of Health, intends to build one of the largest, most diverse datasets of its kind to help speed up research on many different health conditions.

...

With your help, NIH can ask important questions from citizens that will improve our nation’s health. You will be asked what research questions the All of Us Research Program could address. Your input will be considered at a Research Priorities Workshop in March 2018 and ultimately help NIH build the All of Us research platform with the tools needed to answer those questions.

MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO: #ASN VIDEO COMPETITION!
Understanding Nutritional Science

Deadline: Feb 28, 2018

...

Conversations about nutrition and health are common among many consumers, as they become increasingly aware of and interested in the health benefits of good diet. However, not everyone understands how to evaluate the nutrition information they come across in the media to determine what is science and what isn't.

#ASN has established a video competition, the Understanding Nutritional Science Competition, to promote the creation of short videos that will help the public better understand and evaluate hot topics in nutrition science. The video competition will increase awareness about the amount of false nutrition information in the media and provide the public with tools that will encourage them to investigate and evaluate nutrition information.

This video competition is open to #ASN members only: undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, medical interns, residents, or fellows, and early career professionals (employed for 10 years or less).

The Relation between Polyphenols and Body Composition in US Hispanics/Latinos

Polyphenols offer high antioxidant potential that may protect against chronic diseases. Epidemiologic evidence documenting their influence on body composition and obesity risk is, however, limited, particularly among Hispanics/Latinos, who are disproportionately prone to obesity.

...

This #CDN study evaluated cross-sectional associations of urinary polyphenols with body mass index and body fat percentage in a diverse Hispanic/Latino population.

The authors found that, although associations were weak, resveratrol and urolithin A were inversely associated with obesity. Repeated polyphenol urine measures could clarify their long-term impact on body adiposity.

US Family Physicians Overestimate Personal Omega-3 Fatty Acid Biomarker Status: Associations with Fatty Fish and Omega-3 Supplement Intake

The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are well established; however, only a small percentage of Americans consume the recommended amounts of fatty fish, the main dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids, and most have low omega-3 fatty acid blood levels.

...

The authors of this study measured biomarkers of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid (EPA and DHA) status among family physicians to determine whether having their omega-3 status tested would influence attitudes and patient recommendations.

The authors found that blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids in family physicians were below recommendations. There was a discrepancy between perceived and actual omega-3 status. They concluded that increased awareness of personal omega-3 status among physicians may facilitate patient communication and recommendations about omega-3 fatty acid intake.
