The UKC has now taken a strong stand against the silver colored dogs being falsely registered as "Chocolate Labradors". AKC needs to follow suit!
The following is a copy of response from UKC to quest...ion about "silver Labs" (which our National club clearly says don't exist):

"Hello G....sorry for the delay in getting back to you. HRC is our only program that I'm aware of that does require PL dogs to be spayed or neutered. In all other UKC events, it is not required. That was a decision of the Hunting Retriever Club. Silver labs are not eligible for standard registration at UKC just so you are aware. If someone is advertising that they either mean the dogs will be Performance Listed (PL) or will attempt to circumvent the system in the registration of those pups. That could/would result in those papers being rescinded at a later date once we became aware of the situation.

You should also be aware that a dilute colored lab if Performance Listed must be listed as an Unrecognized Breed (UNR) which would make the dog ineligible to run in HRC events as they are only open to PL dogs listed as a breed from the gundog group. The bottom line is that HRC is taking a strong stance to keep the dilute Labs out of the Hunting Retriever Club and United Kennel Club is supporting them.

I hope that answers your questions. It is a little confusing. Good luck.

Todd Kellam, UKC"

AKC, until today I would have given a much higher rating, but I discovered that you are affiliated with Puppy Spot, an internet puppy seller. They are listed as AKC Authorized and list a bunch of ben...efits that their puppy buyers get from you. (See the comments) This is absolutely unacceptable and a slap in the face to your Breeders Of Merit, to your parent breed clubs, to those that support you with AKC entry fees and belong to AKC sanctioned dog clubs. We try our best to educate the public on appropriate ways to buy puppies from reputable breeders by making sure you see where the puppies are raised, that the parents have all appropriate health testing, that you meet the parents, you work with the breeder to make sure it is an appropriate breed for your family and lifestyle... none of this happens with Puppy Spot. It is in complete opposition to what you provide on your site as the definition of a Reputable Breeder. To top it off they advertise they only work with 10% of the breeders that apply, making it seem like only the very best puppies are available. However, in the purebred Labrador section they list about SEVEN different colors of Labradors including Charcoal and Silver. How can you give this company your approval when they don't even know the breed standard of the dogs they are selling? I can only hope that they are using AKC's name and logo without permission and you will put a stop to it. If you do "authorize" them, shame on you. As someone who shows in a number of AKC venues this just breaks my heart. See More

American Kennel Club should have a special partners club for dog and wolf hybrids; I was so excited about signing my dogs up as partners and getting one month of the AKC insurance; until I read at the... bottom no wolf dog hybrids. MY sweet babies Mavro and China are 19 years old; & it I'd not their fault that they have a wolf grandpa on their mother's side and and a wolf grandpa on their father's side. To discriminate against an innocent animal Is so wrong. You can't even tell my babies are part wolf; they just look like lab dogs. See More

AKC, you've turned into a disgrace! Not only do you hand out "papers" to anyone who has the money to pay, but you give awards to shameful KY legislators who refuse to strengthen our animal welfare law...s in this state! Kentucky is #50 when it comes to protecting animals. I'm ashamed to say, it's even legal to have sex with animals in KY, because a recent bill that would outlaw it wasn't even put to a vote, due to The Houndsmen lobbyists.
The AKC promotes backyard breeders. The AKC doesn't care about animal abuse and neglect. The only thing AKC papers are good for is lining a crate! Boo! Hiss!

"Please fall in line with the Labrador Retriever Club and recognize that silver, charcoal and champagne Labs are not genetically pure bred Labs. Stop allowing fraudulent, irresponsible and unethical b...reeders to register them as Labs and advertise them on your site. These colors are already a disqualification in the conformation ring. Make these colors a disqualification at other AKC competitive events. We, the responsible and ethical Labrador breeders are fed up with the Don't Ask, Don't Tell attitude exhibited by the AKC with regard to this travesty. You are supposed to be interested in protecting the breed, not just the almighty dollar." See More

The AKC just gave awards to 2 Kentucky politicians who do nothing to help the welfare of animals in Kentucky!! Kentucky has the worst animal protection laws in the country 11 years in a row!!! How d...are the AKC give awards to people who continue to allow the abuse, torture and abandonment of animals on a daily basis. Kentucky needs change but these two should have been awarded the prize for neglecting animals and allowing horrible abuse!!! Anything for money I guess! See More

It's no secret that the AKC fights all proposed bills that would prevent puppy sales at pet stores. They also fight bills designed to improve the conditions of the puppy's parents that live in large s...cale commercial breeding facilities. By doing so, the AKC is telling the consumer that buying their puppy from a pet store is fine. The AKC knows very well that the parent dogs, a.k.a. 'breeding stock', are living in horrible conditions. I'd like the AKC to explain their contradictory position on 'mass produced' or 'puppy mill' puppies while they also support 'responsible breeders'. They warn prospective pet owners to only go to a 'responsible breeder' in their recent book: "The New Complete Dog Book, 22nd Edition". Why does the AKC make no effort to help the dogs that spend their entire lives living in wire cages, standing on a wire floor, getting bred at every heat cycle, without exercise, grooming or handling? It would appear the logic is so the consumer will purchase and register those pet store puppies and the AKC can collect the registration fees! I feel it's so hypocritical that the AKC is considered 'the dog's champion'! They certainly aren't a 'champion' for the dogs living in puppy mills! See More

I thought you were an objective, non-biased organization that the public could trust for information about dogs. However, I have found numerous articles on your website after a google search that are ...“sponsored”. You even have a link for “advertising” on your website for vendors who can pay you a minimum of $10,000 to promote their product on your site, yet you don”t “endorse” any? And yet you claim you are “non-profit”? One of your sponsored advertisers just had a recall of products due to salmonella (Redbarn Bully Sticks). See More

AKC through your continued practice of registering litters of Australian Shepherds with two merle parents, you are encouraging unscrupulous breeders. They have zero disincentive to refrain from a bree...ding practice that results in 25% of puppies being born blind and/or deaf and often with cognitive impairment which results in shortened life expectancy. Stop allowing the registration of puppies with 2 merle parents! See More

Tired of the AKC. Called twice today. Put on hold for 11 min. and later for 10 minutes. Fees are getting to where they are not worth the money for hunting dogs. Registration for mail in is runn...ing about a month. Online is better. This tells me their computers are much more dependable than employees. I can live without AKC. See More

The AKC provides little value to Breeders and dog owners. Their shows are designed to pad the handler circuit. The judges are all retired handlers without true breeding knowlege or science backgroun...d. It is a shame how this organization has fallen. If you are looking for a healthy responsibly raised pet there are alternatives to the AKC label. See More

Stop supporting puppy mills! I used to LOVE watching the dog shows and even went to a few of them. Now I know- the AKC is almost entirely subsidized by people who have NO love for dogs. Shame on you, ...AKC. Your leadership has put you on the wrong side of history. See More

The American Kennel Club is a breed apart from any other, so helpful that I always looked to them for answers when I got my Dachshund's back in 2002. My little boy and girl are now over over Rainbow B...ridge but made it thirteen and fourteen years. Loved their magazine with so much advice. See More

This organization supports the retail sale of puppies from puppy mills. Google puppy mills and learn the truth about this horrific and cruel industry. The AKC does not care about the welfare of dogs.... They are all about breeding and money and are fine with millions of unwanted dogs and puppies being killed in American shelters each year. They are fine with 32 states still using gas chambers in their shelters. Never support this organization in any way. See More

Is it true you've opposed anti-bestiality legislation? We desperately need the CGC program and I always get my dogs certified but this is a new low, sickening enough to want to have nothing to do with you.

A wet-nosed dog can be sick, just as dry-nosed dog can be perfectly healthy.

Most pet owners believe a wet, cold nose signals a healthy dog, but a dry nose doesn't necessarily mean your dog is sick.
