Run by the most amazingly well read person I've ever known, her affection and enthusiasm for books is contaigious. A truly welcoming place for anyone, reader or not.

This place is great. My son had a book signing on 04/12/14, "How to Spot a Pagan" by A.T. Sawilo, and the people that were running the place were wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. They even put out r...efreshements. Very comfortable place & my husband picked up some books. Wonderful store. See More

If there were an option for 0 stars, I would pick that one. :-(

This past March, Gillette (owner of Open Book) scheduled me in for an Author Event on Monday, June 12th at 6:30pm. I arrived that day... to find the bookstore closed, and then found an email sent 72 hours prior requesting a possible rescheduling since she had better things to do that day:

Kiersten,
Would it be possible to reschedule your visit to An Open Book?

I have a very dear friend visiting from out-of-state Sunday through Wednesday and especially since the bookstore is closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday it would be wonderful if we can reschedule this to another day/time.

I have not sold any copies of Corner Confessions yet and have received no inquiries about the event either through social media or by telephone.
Regards,

A couple of questions:
1. Why did she bother to schedule a Book Reading/Author Event on a day she was closed?
2. Why couldn't she bring her friend to the Event she had scheduled 3 months prior?
3. With the lack of professionalism she has shown, does she really think I'm ever going to do business with her in the future?

Then for a follow-up email to my response to this first email sent, she further buries herself:

So sorry about the last minute cancellation and miscommunication. I only get to see my friend once a year. If you aren't able or don't wish to pick up your books, I will certainly send them back to you. I highly recommend the Uptown as a great alternative for meeting with friends and family. Again, my apologies for the mix-up. Best of luck on the rest of your tour.

1. If she only gets to see her out-of-town friend once per year, then I would imagine she would have had that visit in her schedule prior to June 9th/12th when she could have rescheduled at a more appropriate time. But then again, why would she schedule something for a day she wasn't planning on being open?

When I got into Wadena on the afternoon of the 12th, I was faced with finding a new location for my Book Reading in 3 hours, and then somehow getting that info out to any guests. The Cyber Cafe across the street closed at 5pm, and the Uptown Cafe had their meeting rooms already booked for that evening. I wound up standing outside of the bookstore until 6:30pm, and redirecting guests to the new location I had found. Guests came from as far as Brainerd and Perham, along with a few locals.

As a professional courtesy, if a business owner is planning on not upholding their verbal agreement on an arrangement made with an out of town guest, the very least they can do is find another venue for the event to be held at; Gillette didn't even bother to do that.

The other things Gillette didn't even bother to do was post the event on her FB Page for the store (or the cancellation of said event), utilize any of the advertising pieces I sent her, share the Event info with any outside sources such as the Wadena Pioneer Journal or the local Chamber of Commerce, Library, etc.

However, I consider myself to be a professional who stands by my word and fulfills my promises; as a thank you for agreeing to host an Author Event, I paid nearly $200 for Sponsored FB ads, Twitter ads, and posted the event with the Pioneer Journal.

Essentially, Gillette received 3 months of free advertising and when I stopped in to pick up my books (which she had to dig for in the backroom), to any of my statements and/or questions, her answer was, "It's not my problem."

Gillette is unprofessional. I can see why her business is closing. To any Authors who are interested in scheduling an Event with An Open Book, perhaps you should think twice.
