It’s Thanksgiving week; tell me what you are so grateful for–it would make my day. Here are some of the things I’m grateful for:
1. I'm grateful to be vertical and to be in love with someone who has a gift for helping me do things I am frightened of or resistant to. For example, Neal dragged me to hear a funk band at the Fillmore, which is so not me. (Picture making Rosalynn Carter go to a Funkadelic concert.) But despite the long drive, parking in San Francisco, and being surrounded by marijuana smoke after 30 years of being clean and sober, I was so glad I went. What a wild field trip. Plus, now he owes me forever.
2. I give thanks every day for my closest friends. They are the reason I have such deep faith in God and goodness because they make me laugh, and they give me hope and courage. Because of them I shall fear no evil. I know they will never leave me to struggle with loss or hardship alone. They get me through rough patches with family, politics, health, and even the inevitable death of pets. I would be so doomed without them that I don't even like to think about it. They are my marvelous motley pit crew.
3. I wake up every morning stunned by the beauty outside my windows and door. I see the glory of God in the trees, birds, flowers, and other people's faces when I hike. Every single time I cross the Golden Gate Bridge, I feel as blown away and grateful as someone arriving at Ellis Island. I'm even grateful to the purple morning glories that have completely taken over the backyard, like kudzu. Nature fills me with joy, awe, and wonder, which in turn fill me with hope and stamina. Thank you, Mother, for your mind-blowing beauty (except for snakes, which is where I draw the line). As Rumi said, there are many ways to bend and kiss the ground.
4. Libraries, books, and poetry first offered me salvation when I was a child, and they will again later today in the aftermath of this election. They were and are my first church.
Gratitude is the great secret of the mystics, the solution to all problems. Remembering these things, not just on Thanksgiving but every day, is the way home.

I’m doing a fundraiser for my tiny church on May 22, at Calvary Prez in San Francisco. I’ll be speaking and reading. The Calvary choir will join with the mighty St Andrew choir to bring down the roof.
Please come—details below—but if you can’t and still want to support us, you can send donations to me at St. Andrew, 101 Donahue, Marin City, Ca 94965. Love and great thanks!

When the rain finally gives way to those lovely May blooms, anything is possible.
