'The potent influence of #Nietzsche seems to have played a subtle part in corroding the old ideal. ... [He] was disdainful of accepted notions. He had a way of ...probing into things, and somehow, after he had probed, the things never quite looked the same ... .
And then his Over-Man, however fantastic a figure, seemed to make ridiculous any attempt to kow-tow to the mass-man.'

The Apocalypse of S...t. John is a unique book conceived in 1959 by the publisher of art books Joseph Foret with the collaboration of many artists and writers. It is the most expensive and the heaviest book in the world.
This book was produced, in three years, in a single copy, on parchment (150 sheets of 65 × 75 cm) under a bronze cover with decoration of gold and precious stones which weighs itself 150 kg, the book weighing a total of 210 kg.
The text of the Apocalypse of Saint John is illustrated, at the rate of 3 paintings per artist, by 7 painters representing the different trends of modern art: Salvador Dalí, Mathieu Mathieu, Bernard Buffet, Leonor Fini, Léonard Foujita, Pierre- Yves Tremois, Ossip Zadkine.
Seven writers of various specialties and convictions wrote commentaries, reflections or meditations on the text of the apostle: Jean Cocteau, Jean Rostand, Daniel-Rops, Jean Guitton, Emil Cioran, Jean Giono and Ernst Jünger. Their texts are illustrated with engravings by various artists, including Jean Cocteau himself or Albert Decaris.
The bronze cover is from Salvador Dalí.

A noble man is he who leaves all the comfortable modes of happiness to the great majority. Who instinctively seeks heavy responsibilities. Who constantly contradicts the great majority not through words, but through deeds
