Like most infants with biliary atresia (BA), Sydney had the Kasai procedure at Johns Hopkins Hospital to repair her liver on January 10, 2008. She was four weeks old. Even after a successful surgery, most infants with BA slowly develop cirrhosis over the years and require a liver transplant by adulthood.
