One of these players was intent on injuring a player. One of these players shoved the team captain into the stands by the neck. One of these players got a 3 game suspension. One of these players got a 1 game suspension despite not being shown in the brawl. I'll let you sort out what colors the USL chose to slap on the wrist, and which color got a token suspension. (Here's a hint... Switchbacks FC Saeed Robinson got suspended a game for being in the fight.)
Our boy all growed up! 😝
I don’t know if folks have heard of ‘Last Word On Sports’? They have writers covering all sorts of sports nationally and internationally. They have an entire te...am focused exclusively on soccer called, unsurprisingly, ‘Last Word On Soccer’. Their writing team covers pretty much every outdoor pro soccer team here in the US.
Anyway, ‘Last Word On Soccer’ now has a Switchbacks writing rep; yours truly. Here’s my first article. Clicks matter; they help raise the Switchbacks profile with Last Word SC and its soccer readers. So, thanks for clicking on – and hopefully reading – the pieces I ‘pen’ for our hometown team this season. It’s seriously much appreciated.
The Switchbacks FC announced Monday morning that Shane Malcolm has been called up to the Guam National Team. The Guam National Team will be playing friendlies with Los Dos and San Diego State during the next FIFA International Fixture Window week between 3/19 and 3/27. This likely means he will be unavailable for the next game against Portland Timbers 2 this Saturday 3/24.
While there have been several Switchbacks players over the years with prior international experience wi...th their respective countries, Malcolm is the first to be called up while an active player for the Switchbacks. Previously, he has 20 caps for Guam, scoring 2 goals.
"It's an honor to be called up to the National Team," said Malcolm. "I'm looking forward to meeting the new coach and staff they have. We haven't played in a year, so I'm looking forward to getting some time in before upcoming competitive fixtures."
"It's a great honor for him," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "I talked to the coach a few weeks ago when he was going to call him up, and anytime you get the opportunity to get called up to your National Team it's an honor. They're trying to get to the next level with this new head coach and Shane is a big part of that."
Guam, a member of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup but has had recent progress in hosting World Cup qualifiers in Guam, a first for the nation of 162,000. Their current FIFA ranking is 191.

With the new season just a couple of weeks away, why not get your Switchbacks FC geek fully on by reading one supporters 2017 'season in review', game by game, and all the bits in between! This is book by a fan for fans, but it also piqued the players interest too, as this review shows...
"Seasonal Disorder was an excellent portrayal of the 2017 Switchbacks FC season from a die-hard fan! Mark shares his love of the beautiful game and his home team in a unique perspective that captures the rollercoaster ride of a pro soccer season." ~Luke Vercollone
The Switchbacks FC announced the promo nights and the door giveaways. Looks like some fun nights... and if Jason doesnt get a Chewbacca jersey, he might figuratively die.
Good stuff team! We're looking forward to the season!
Currently setting up to record Back Chat's first pod of the 2018 season. Let's see... has there been any Switchbacks FC news happening recently?
On a side note... do I still remember how to record stuff? I have no idea what I'm doing...
Key comments from today’s shirt reveal/team introduction...
- Nick Ragain said they hoped/believe that the $1 beer promo at every home game will help drive match-day attendance. He also said with the games being televised locally this season, ‘Saturday nights belong to the Switchbacks!’
- Excited with Copelli partnership, Coach Trittschuh said the kit provider also had youth academies around the world and that there will be opportunity to leverage this new partnership to have... access to some of that young player talent
- Coach Trittschuh went on to say that he and Coach Wolde believe this is the best roster they’ve ever put together. Last seasons team was too young, and the experience they’ve added this year will make all the difference. The focus is getting back to the play-offs.
- Josh Suggs was announced as new team skipper. Suggs went on to say that the team was getting ‘back to its roots’, focused on working hard so that fans could ‘never doubt our work ethic’.
The tale of any Switchbacks FC season is largely the combination of our fans story in the stands, and the players story on the field. I’m grateful then that several of last seasons’ roster have read the book and a couple of them have already provided me with brief reviews…
"This book is a fun read and an interesting insight into the Switchbacks 2017 season from a fan/journalist perspective." ~ Eddy Prugh
“If you have a passion for the Switchbacks, then this book is exactly ...for you! As a player at the club during the time it is written, it was compelling to understand how a dedicated supporter views all facets of the organization. Mark Turner from Back Chat was able to capture the voices of the players and give a true reflection of a season filled with highs & lows.” ~Chris James
As we prepare for the 2018 try-outs, friendlies, and finally the kick-off of the new USL season, why not revisit the Switchbacks last campaign - the agony, the ecstasy, those moments that made you cheer and sing, and those that left you scratching your head; it’s all here.
All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Several of my family have Type 1, with the latest being diagnosed very recently. I’m sure you may know someone dealing with Diabetes, too. It’s rough. Your contribution to this worthy cause would be much appreciated, and I hope reciprocated with a good read.
