Pro-Touch Eagles United 3
Barnstonworth Rovers FC 2
We opened the State Cup scoring in the 5th minute with a ball over the top from Kiko Florez to Joaco Lynch that he slotted home past the keeper. The ref took back control of the game 15 min in with his second card to our center midfield, this one straight red to Gustavo for his first foul, a late standing challenge on the ball at midfield. They equalized on an OG on the near post on a goal line cross....
Early second half, they jumped ahead on Stefano Archangel's second OG of the game when he attempted to head clear a cross to the middle of the box that he put squarely away in the top corner. Digging deep in the 57th minute, we were able to equalize off a throw-in from captain Dave Leboff that Dan Jeon flick headed and snuck inside the far post. Not wanting the game to slip away to penalties in the last 15 minutes, the ref saw to it to eject our keeper and award a PK dropping us to 9 men. Nelson Restrepo took over in goal and intimidated the PK sky high so we dug in to try and play for penalties. Unfortunately the 12 v 9 on-field advantage was too much for us to hold on and their late long throw to the back post found three open heads for the winner, and the smiling ref emerged the MVP of the game.
Silver lining is the boys will now be able to defend their back to back Saunders Cup championships in the spring.
Barnstonworth Rovers Metro: back-to-back Harry J Saunders Cup winners!
Our Metro D2 team beat Sporting Astoria FC Reserves last night, punching well above their weight to take a trophy that's competed for by D2 Reserve, Metro D1, and Metro D2 teams. Congratulations to Tim Hattori & the squad!
Congratulations to Juan and the Rovers thirds who scooped the Harry J Saunders Cup this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Ukrainian SC reserves! Jorge Espanol got the goal in the 20th minute to take down a strong D2 reserve side. The boys are currently off 🍻🍾 somewhere...
On behalf of everyone involved with BRFC, I'd like to wish Colin Reid all the best as he heads off to the west coast to sample life in yet another location! He has consistently been the club's greatest servant for over 20 years and his dedication to all things Barnstonworth will be truly missed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Aldo Morales about to take a corner for Barnstonworth Rovers Metro on a chilly Randall's Island today. Rovers 1-0 up at the half against Galicia.
