Quick devo from Beth this morning!
My AM Bible reading was disturbingly powerful and shook me so in case anybody else needs shaking: Reading plan has me in Proverbs 1. Wisdom’s talking: V23 NET “If only you will respond to my rebuke THEN I will pour out my thoughts to you and will make my words known to you.”
How often might it be that we have a clog in the pipe of wisdom we need because we wouldn’t take a rebuke from God? Probably never even heard it. In fact, it might be fa...ir to say if we can’t recall the last personal rebuke we got from God, we’re not listening. He chastens His own.
Then Proverbs 1:25 “...you neglected all my advice & did not comply with my rebuke.” Point lands chillingly in Vv30-31: ”they did not comply with my advice, they spurned all my rebuke. Therefore they will eat from the fruit of their way and will be stuffed full of their own counsel.”
Good Lord, if we’re not a generation stuffed full of our own counsel then I don’t know what we are. And we’re eating the fruit of our own way. We’ve become a band of rebukers. We lie in wait for an opportunity and with each rebuke comes an endorphin hit. Feeling right feels so good.
Very convicted this AM that we who are so busy rebuking people have almost without fail become deaf to God’s rebuke of us and become fools without even knowing it. Yes, issuing a rebuke can be right and appropriate but, if we miss our own, wisdom halts and we’re stuffed full of folly.
So anyway, I feel rebuked by God this AM for a thing or 2. Or 3. And I’m repenting. And with gladness and grace because I want -I NEED- the pipe of wisdom from above to be unclogged. As clear as possible. Too much at stake for if we leaders are fools, to where will we lead?
A word from Beth this morning...
Save your breath on platitudes in prayer. Give God the praise He’s due then get to it. Get down into the grit of the matter. Spill it. Spell it out to Him, not because He doesn’t already know but because THIS is intimacy with God. Tell Him where you’re tempted. Why you’re angry.
Often it’s not until I start spilling it to God that I’m able to sort out what’s built up in my heart and head. If I don’t talk it out and try to put some language ar...ound it, it stays tangled up in a big knot. We often process with other people but what I’m saying is do this with GOD.
Jesus is the ultimate untangler of knots. He did it continually with His parables. Can He not do it with His people? The psalmist said to pour our hearts out to God, that He is a refuge for us. Trust Him. In telling Him what He already knows, He often reveals to us what we don’t.
