This is an old favorite of mine, generally I hate cycling around in circles, but there’s not much option if you’ve only got an hour lunch break to spare. Most of the time I would train / exercise in Lumpinee park at noon, cycling around in a 2.5 kilometer circle, it’s okay I guess as you don’t have to worry about cars and simply let your mind wonder as I complete 20 km before heading back to the office to work. But today, my first day of hopping back on a bike to exercise at...

I love bicycles, I love riding, I’ve been riding since I was a kid and basically never stopped cycling thoughout the years. All I do is dream about riding, going here and there on my bicycle, it’s like an obsession, fixation, or whatever. During the course of my cycling years, my craving for new bicycles is not any less than that to my need for cycling. And one of my “things” is small wheeled bikes, I don’t know what it is about them, the nifty feeling, the fact that you ca...

I love bicycles, I love riding, I’ve been riding since I was a kid and basically never stopped cycling. All I do is dream about riding, going here and there on my bicycle. But strangely the Brompton doesn’t give me that urge to get on the bike and go somewhere. I’ve had small wheeled bikes before, my first bike was a Chevy foldable bike with 16″ wheels, front & rear shocks, actually I had two, they were Christmas presents for my two kids. Actually they were adult bikes, but... in the past it was hard to find quality bikes for children. Another small wheeled bike I bought was from a Chinese manufacturer, Gogo Bike, the bicycle was designed after the original Dahon Smoothhound, which didn’t fold, only later did Dahon develop the lock jaw hinges. The Gogobike was an excellent mini velo, running 20″ wheels, bearing hubs, a road bike drop-bar, Ultegra/Tiagra group mix, the bike performed very fast and smooth, it was just a joy to ride the bike. I even rode the Gogobike on a century from Bangkok to Bangsaen seaside resort, and it really puts a smile on your face (even though I got soaking wet from the tropical storm). I got bored with the Gogobike, so I sold it and bought another bike, don’t ask me what as I hardly remember the order of bikes I’ve owned, not that it is relevant anyhow. But another small wheeled bike was the folding road bike Dahon Speedpro, this was the last of the chromoly steel series, after that it was only available as an aluminium frame. Looking back I think I bought this bike because of the looks, it was one of those compulsive decisions that I made without even looking at the bike for more then 2 seconds hahaha. Unfortunately the looks didn’t translate into ride quality, the cheap Chinese copy was far more fun to ride and I dearly missed it. I eventually sold the Dahon Speedpro even though initially I said I would never sell it as it was now not commercially available and could become a collectors item, but I just couldn’t get over the creaking seat tube, harsh handling, brakes that never worked, etc.

BROMPTON, MY INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

The very next day after my Brompton purchase, I decided I would now test my dual commute, bike and train.

I was very excited about the idea, finally my dream realized, no longer having to endure long car journeys, back ache, two hours of stop and go traffic, sitting and thinking about dying in the car, literally.

GOT MYSELF A BROMPTON

The day before I made a visit to the A Day Bike Fest 2017 at the Airport Link Makkasan station, and was pleasantly surprised to see the fair increased in size from previous years, there were more distributors and retailers selling accessories. Perhaps the downtrend of cycling caused the big boys to come out, hoping to create an uptick in demand by offering discounts.

A BROMPTON COPY

I visited the A Day Bike Fest 2017 at the Airport Link Makkasan station, and was pleasantly surprised to see the fair increased in size from previous years, there were more distributors, and retailers selling accessories. Perhaps the downtrend of cycling caused the big boys to come out, hoping to create an uptick in demand by offering discounts. For me this is always a good time to purchase last years, or even older stock, bicycles with some serious discount...s. I don’t care if my bike is wearing the current year colors or not, it’s going to get scratched one day anyhow, and that’s also another good reason why I prefer the color black. I attended the fair because it’s a good opportunity to see all the folding bikes I had been eyeing, and others, in one place. I decided it was time I had to make a decision, so I guessed. Anyway, to get back on track walking around I came across and shiny looking Brompton rip off, thought that was a bit brazen but then I remembered that the patent for Brompton expired already, though they tried to register copyright for certain parts I don’t think it really worked. At Baht 15,000 net it was a bargain, however I can vouch for quality, durability or engineering, I’m not adventurous enough to risk my life on one of these either, but sales were going briskly. But this is not the first time we’ve seen a Brompton copy, there’s also the MIT Cycle, an Alloy contraption from China of course.

I think I can safely say that like most cyclist, my first cycling computer was a basic Cateye Velo, which is great, does it's job like it's supposed to do, gives info on speed, distance, calorie, etc., and that was really all you wanted to know, especially maximum speed.
