We join Black Lives Matter - Los Angeles, Dignity and Power Now, The Reverence Project, Risist, and Defend Movement to demand the National Rifle Association of America remove their anti-movement ads.

"When the NRA issues a public call to their constituents inciting violence against people who are constitutionally fighting for their lives, we don't take that lightly."

The NRA was silent when the officer who killed Black legal gunowner #PhilandoCastile escaped jail. The NRA al...so claims grassroots movements led by people of color are the enemy.

"We are tired of White supremacists calling for our death and we want the NRA to know we won't accept their bullying," explains Dignity and Power Now founder Patrisse Cullors in a statement.

Call the NRA at 800-672-3888 to demand the videos be removed.

"The local is where the work is. If we're looking at just the national, it's pretty devastating. But if you zoom into cities, to towns, to rural areas, people are fighting back and people are winning," says Patrisse Khan-Cullors, who helped birth #blacklivesmatter.

Activists admit movement around national issues like police reform has been slow, but say they're focused on local issues — from paying subway fare to helping serve dinner to homeless people.

New Report Alert: Police Spending across the U.S.

>>> Read: https://populardemocracy.app.box.com/v/FreedomtoThrive

Center for Popular Democracy, Law for Black Lives, and BYP 100 conducted a critical assessment of police spending in #Atlanta, #Baltimore, #Chicago, #ContraCosta, #Detroit, #Houston, #LosAngeles, #Minneapolis, #NewYorkCity, #Oakland, #Orlando, and #StLouis. In these jurisdictions, police spending ranges from $381 to $772 per capita, and vastly outpaces spending ...on vital community resources and services.

The report highlights how participatory budgeting to invest primarily in communities and their development -- particularly in the areas of mental health services, youth programming, transit access, education, and housing infrastructure -- can be far more successful in reducing crime than police or prisons.

"As a typical child of the Eighties, I remember growing up surrounded by “Americana”. I was regaled with stories of my grandfather and his brothers fighting valiantly in WWII. I proudly memorized the Pledge of Allegiance, and knew every verse of “America, The Beautiful.” My life was not all that dissimilar to any other kid growing up in the great state of Michigan.

The difference, however, is that the Americana I grew up with was filtered through dramatically different lenses.... The powerful and stories of boot camps and dogfights were balanced with my grandfather’s experience as a Tuskegee Airman. The verses to “Lift Every Voice And Sing” were embedded in my remembrance with an almost religious conviction. And, while I stood every morning and pledged “allegiance” to the Stars and Stripes, the “Stars and Bars” were vividly on display — even causing my parents to avoid driving us through cities like Howell, MI, for fear of physical violence."

Joining our Montreal fam in taking the streets calling for Justice for Pierre Coriolan. Anti-Blackness knows no borders. They hunt us coast-to-coast.

The paral...lels between the Andrew Loku case and the Pierre Coriolan case reveal an alarming systemic reality of fatal interactions between Black people in crisis and police. Both Black men were killed in their homes by police, both were from immigrant communities, both police departments refused to release the names of the police officers who killed the men, and in both cases the police and the media actively engaged in a campaign to smear and criminalize the victims. Black Lives Matter is raising the issue of anti-Black racism across Canada and have released the following national demands:

Develop a national Black mental health strategy with Black communities across the country that seeks to implement policy and service-provision responses.
Mandate Statistics Canada to collect race-based statistics on institutions and services including municipal, provincial and local policing and mental health services
Mandate the province to collect race-based data in regards to policing, and mental health services
