Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and it comes in the midst of national protests over police brutality, and senseless gun violence across this country.
Racism and white supremacy have put black people, other people of color, and members of the LGBTQ community at continued risk of gun violence. Children are also victims of gun violence.
Add to that the rare but tragic cases of police violence in cities across America over the last several years, and we have a National Emergency.
We need universal background checks and strict but reasonable requirements to purchase firearms in this country, and gun safety training as part of the purchase process. To honor the Constitutional right to own firearms, gun owners MUST show they are responsible to do so.

I posted a couple of days ago about the lack of leadership in the current administration following violence occurring in our country over the death of George Floyd. I received some feedback asking if I had forgotten about Ferguson under President Obama.
I have not forgotten about Micheal Brown, Jr. I have also not forgotten Rodney King. I first saw that infamous video during briefing before going on duty as a police officer. I have not forgotten the numerous injustices perp...etrated by a very few bad seeds in our public safety communities.
King occurred under Republican President Bush, Brown under Democratic President Obama. The point is that neither of those presidents went on TV to insult Governors and Mayors. They didn't threaten a federal take over of state and local operations, and they didn't suggest shooting looters. Both presidents showed true leadership by advocating for calm and justice, not violence and federal aggression.
