We are excited to announce that our #BCC member (mama Kongosi) will be speaking at the #WOWBradford event on 5th November at the "International Activism" panel with like-minded individuals including Sasha Bhat, Kashmir child of conflict, and Malia Bouttia, President of NUS; sharing stories and wisdom of raising awareness about women's right issues across borders and inspiring local UK campaigners to get involved.
Will you be there?

I wanted to take this time to provide our supporters, especially those who contributed financially to help with ...legal fees for Jeanmarie Kalonji's case to know what has been happening on the ground.

For safety and helping get his case through, I decided to not post much about his case online.

You can learn more about Jean Marie Kalonji here: http://standnow.org/2016/02/16/freejeanmarie/

Today, Jean Marie appeared before the judge to hear the charges against him. He is being charged with distributing images on facebook to cause civil unrest, mobilizing against the national dialogue organized by Congolese president Kabila and for infringing on Congo's national security.

While this is deplorable, it is still a huge update from the last post we made on him.

Jean Marie Kalonji was kidnapped by unidentified armed men on December 15, 2015. We have found out that he spent 3 days in a military camp, then was transferred to the Congolese Intelligence agency (ANR in French) and held incommunicado until April 25 when his lawyers were informed that he will finally be transferred to a regular prison.

On April 28, 2016, he was finally transferred to the Makala prison and has been there since. His lawyers are continuing to fight to get him out of prison. I am so moved by his courage to stay on the ground and fight the system. He has been able to write a few letters in French to supporters and his family.

It was a joy to receive a photo of him, after he had spent 6 months in jail with no charges and no communication with everyone. In one of his letters, he said that he understands the challenges of being a prisoner because of what he and his comrades stand for but he is willing to sacrifice his youth for a better Congo.

The outcome of today's court date is that there will be another appearance in the near future to find out the next stage. His lawyers are fighting for his temporary release until his trial.

More to share, but for now, we are encouraged to see our brother still standing tall against all odds!

Once more, thank you for all of you for lifting up Jean Marie's name and for supporting actions for his release.

Our thoughts and prayers are with people in Beni. Not a month goes by without a massacre taking place there. Harrowing accounts of people being senselessly hack...ed to death. Just a little over a week ago over 30 people were killed. The DR Congo government and the international community have not given this problem the attention it requires. As a people, both in the Congo and the diaspora, we are changing our FB profile for the rest of May to help draw attention on this situation. We call for urgent action. Please consider standing in solitary with us #jesuisbeni #iambeni #nazalibeni

'A few of our BCC members were #SpottedInLondon reunited with other women activists at the annual Million Women Rise march last Saturday, calling for an end to male violence towards women and denouncing the Congolese government's inaction to protecting women and girls victimised by the war!! We support their efforts to shine a light on war-related gender based violence and applaud their work! #JoinTheMovement #FreeCongo #BreakTheSilence #HappyInternationalWomensWeek'
'#ThrowbackThursday to a couple of months ago after the #Telema protest in Kinshasa when the Congolese government took measures to cut off all telecommunications as a means of silencing those using social media to share with the world the news on the ground. We too as a group did our part to denounce the governments move to shut down the internet, SMS and international radio. Congolese people also have the right to communication and freedom of speech. #Telema #BreakingTheSilence #TheirVoiceOurVoice'
'Our day was spent at the Refugee Week stall encouraging people to join us in writing letters to our mobile phone companies as well as major UK mining companies, keeping them accountable and demanding their transparency on where their Coltan comes from. Lots of letters were signed and ready for postage. #HappyInternationalDayOfRefugee #advocacy #CongoMatters #WriteForRight'
'Our first #ThrowBackThursday takes us back to this time last year when our members attended the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London hosted by the then Foreign Secretary William Hague and Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy for the UN Commissioner for Refugees. Our members were thrilled to be a part of it, especially as issues of rape as a weapon of war in DRC was being raised.

This is Asumani Susho, a dedicated member of BCC and campaigner from the DRC showing the fliers we were distributing and wearing our famous t-shirt which nearly had us not allowed in as the police thought we were disturbing protesters. Campaigning on such issues is not easy but we know that we MUST continue to break the silence, for too many people in the DRC need us to raise our voices on their behalf. Will you raise yours? #BreakingTheSilence #SexualViolenceInConflictMustEnd #CongoMatters'
'A few weeks ago a group of our members met outside BRI (Bradford Royal Infirmary) to stand in solidarity with @[291696894273559:274:Panzi Hospital] in Eastern DRC, following the hospital's accounts being seized by the Congo government. We continue to denounce this new tactic that is purposely hounding the hospital that has helped to treat more than 30,000 survivors of sexual violence. #StandWithPanzi #KeepPanziHospitalOpen
