Filling in the information gap where our science textbooks and syllabuses are failing 👎🏼⁣

A study of introductory biology textbooks used in the US reported (Wood S, et al.):⁣
📚<7% of scientists mentioned were from racialized backgrounds.⁣
📚Black women did not appear in ANY textbook that was analyzed
⁣
For context, people from racialized backgrounds form 35% of the students awarded bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences in the US.⁣
⁣
What about other countries?⁣
A Teach First analysis highlighted that only 2 women —Rosalind Franklin and Mary Leakey—are mentioned in the UK’s GCSE science curriculum compared to 40 men. ⁣
