This was an amazing preserve with very nice facilities. The outreach materials and interpretive signs along the trails are great. The boardwalks look brand new ...and like they're made from recycled plastic. I came here for an event in the environmental education center and was very impressed! Will definitely be back to explore the rest of the trails! See More

The boardwalk trail is great. There are take-with-you maps at both entrances to the trail system. Miles of trails....love that.Even on a cold day, there were plenty of people, and they all appeared to be having a good time.

I visited with the granddaughter a few weeks ago, and we both loved it! Both of us learned alot, and we can hardly wait to go back. That is, when it cools down a little.

What a beautiful place! We thoroughly enjoyed the educational center and lovely classrooms with all the hands on exhibits for the kids. The hike was wonderful a...nd full of life and learning opportunities for the whole family. Huge spiders, amazing butterflies, grasshoppers, dragon flies, and other mysterious creatures shared the trail with us. It was also great fun figuring out the different foot prints. A truly magical place! See More

Wonderful hidden gem. The trails can be "wild", but that's a good thing.

I love this place. I wish it were close enough to visit more often. The education center is fabulous, even better than Weedon Island.

What an incredible event to witness! Two green anoles fighting it out. There was a female green anole when I first walked up but she darted off when the boys started fighting. I did some research on this behavior and they are doing all of the displays just as the publications state. So if it's not obvious from this video, male anoles are territorial. There are two behaviors seen in this video. One is called "Assertion" and this involves the head bobbing, "push-ups", and extension of the reddish-pink dewlaps. The other is called "Challenge" and this only takes place when two males are present. Challenge behaviors include the turning to the side, neck extensions (which are different than the dewlaps), crest extensions, "puffing" up to make themselves look larger, and the formation of a dark eye spot behind the eye which you can see on the anole on the left. Cool! After these displays, then they fight by biting until there is a loser. I didn't stick around to see who lost, but it was really neat to watch while I did. This here looks like the work of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus various)! Sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker. They make these neat rows of holes in tree bark called #sapwells. Then, they harvest sap from the sapwells along with any insects caught in the sap, yum!

Barn Owl
Check out our barn owl on display here at the Education Center at Brooker Creek! Barn owls (Tyto alba) are the most widespread of all owl species; the only places they do not inhabit are New Zealand, Indonesia, and some parts of the West Indies. Instead of living in woods like most owls, barn owls enjoy open spaces, which includes farmlands, meadows, and towns. Its abundance near farms, especially barns, is how it got its name! For more information check out this fact sheet from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and keep an eye out for our #WildlifeWednesdays posts.

Screech Owl
Interested in seeing wildlife close up? Come check out our friends here at Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center. This Eastern Screech Owl (Otus asio) is Florida’s smallest owl and can survive anywhere in Florida except the lower keys. This owl is a cavity nester, relying on abandoned woodpecker nests and natural tree cavities for a place to call home. If you have a dead or dying tree in your yard, consider leaving it standing as a snag to help our Eastern Screech Owls. For more information check out this fact sheet from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and keep an eye out for our #WildlifeWednesdays posts.

Come and see our Barred Owl at the Education Center at Brooker Creek Preserve! Generally living in areas near water such as a cypress swamp or along rivers and streams, Barred Owls (Strix varia) are some of the only owls that vocalize during the daytime! They get their name from the bars of brown and white on their chest, back, wings and tail.
