We applaud the jail advocates who called on City Hall yesterday to do more to protect front-line staff & COs at the city’s troubled jails. Here is a picture of the contraband COs have confiscated over the last 3 month from visitors coming into Rikers. This highlights the dangerous conditions COs are up against every single day. And underscores the need for immediate reform in protecting our officers.

ICYMI, Correction Officers' Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen appeared on ABC7 news yesterday to demand City Hall take action to prevent future violence against Corrections Officers.
The below statement is attributable to Correction Officers' Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen:
“This morning another Correction Officer was viciously attacked at Rikers by an inmate who has nothing to fear. This follows the Department of Corrections touting their ‘reduction’ in assaults on officers last week. Today, we are calling on the Mayor to fire the Commissioner before one of our officers is killed.”

AFTER THE MORNING MEAL SERVICE IN THE WEST FACILITY ON RIKERS ISLAND IN HOUSING AREA SPRUNG 7 (ENHANCED RESTRAINTS, ADULTS) AN OFFICER ATTEMPTED TO RETRIEVE THE MEAL TRAY FROM INMATE WHITTINGTON, MATTHEW B/C 1411310431(SRG-BLOOD, ICR, RED ID, CL. 30) CELL 708, WHEN THE INMATE EXITED THE CELL UNAUTHORIZED AND BEGAN ASSAULTING THE OFFICER BY PUNCHING THE OFFICER IN THE FACE AND BODY. A SECOND OFFICER CAME TO THE ASSISTANCE OF THE OTHER OFFICER AND THE INMATE BEGAN ASSAULTING BOTH OFFICERS. THE INMATE CUT ONE OFFICER ON THE FOREARM. THE OFFICER DEFENDED HIMSELF BY THROWING SEVERAL PUNCHES TO THE INMATE’S FACIAL AREA. A SCAPEL BLADE WRAPPED IN BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE WAS RECOVERED ON THE FLOOR IN FRONT OF CELL 708. THE OFFICER SUSTAINED A DEEP CUT TO THE RIGHT FOREARM.

Inmates in New York City Jails?
In 2015, 773 Correction Officers were rushed to the hospital from altercations with inmates and 339 Correction Officers were doused with urine or feces. In just the first six months of 2016, 609 Correction Officers were assaulted.
The Department of Corrections and Mayor DeBlasio have been boasting about how assaults have decreased, but the facts speak for themselves.
Open Letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio:
When six hundred and nine (609) Correction Officers are assaulted in a six (6) month period as the Department of Correction reported to the New York Times, this is not cause for celebration but a call to action.
Statement from Correction Officers' Benevolent Association
Can you imagine the outrage in this city if it was reported that 394 NYC police officers were assaulted in the Bronx this year? No one in their right mind should think it is acceptable that 394 law enforcement officers, nearly 5% of the ranks, were assaulted in the Bronx. No other jurisdiction in the country would brag about these numbers. Despite City Hall and the Department touting these statistics, there are no real consequences for the crimes being committed behind bars. That’s why we’ve called for inmates who have attacked CO’s to be transferred out of New York City’s jail system to a facility with secure punitive segregation for the safety of officers.

5starI am frigging tight right now. I just saw on the news that 3 correctionofficers (not guards) were attacked and slashed ...on RIKERS ISLAND AGAIN. LISTEN HERE, i get up with my husband at 2 A.M. and see him off to work. He travels two hours and most times he works more than 8 hours , travels 2 more hours home, sleeps for a few hours and back at it again . somebody needs to tell me that somebody other than me and my family feels that my husband's life means something. The commission er needs to know that his life matters and there is something wrong with the polices in NYC D.O.C. I understand that there are risk our officers take with the job, but when the powers that be have a total disregard for the lives of their OFFICERS and the civil workers on the island and in city jails there is a dam problem. I want my husband to come home the same way he left here, in one piece and in tact. I am calling somebody's ass tomorrow and raising cane. See More

I retired as a Captain but If it were not t for you our union would have to work so much harder. don't get me wrong, the captains union is doing a great job, you make it a little easier for them..
