Criminalization and Punishment Education Project's Post

Criminalization and Punishment Education Project

July 1, 2020  · Shared with Public
The Criminalization and Punishment Education Project would like to thank its members and allies for taking part in our very brief action today on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory / in downtown Ottawa where we stood in solidarity with others engaged in struggles for decolonization, defunding the police, prison abolition, and building communities where we keep each other safe today and every single day. A special thanks to the Punch Up Collective for their work in assisting us with navigating the bizarre situation that unfolded.
While our low-key event was met with police repression at Ottawa Police Services HQ on Elgin, everyone involved was eventually able to safely leave with a 'warning' for our use of spray chalk on municipal sidewalks and property denouncing state violence. The funds used to bankroll the presence of officers that showed-up at the first stop of our event as we were literally leaving the premises would - like all police funding - be much better spent on investments in communities and people that actually enhance our collective well-being and safety. The struggle continues.
