Rox & Anna hosted my book launch at the Cafe and I couldn't have been happier with how the food and the vibe they created made possible the experience
Gotta go--I hear a chocolate-
Dear Friends, Family & Community,
It is with so many emotions that we have to inform you that Cafe SouthSide, as it currently operates, will be closing. Cafe SouthSide and RARE will be leaving 3405 Chicago effective Friday, February 23rd.
Call to Action: We will be moving everything out of the two spaces on Thursday, Feb 22nd 10am -9pm and Friday, Feb 23rd 9am- Noon. We need help moving large and small items during these times, and would greatly appreciate any support you c...an give. If you’d like to say goodbye to this space that has meant so much to so many people, come to the closing ceremony on Thursday, February 22nd at 5:30pm.
Why we're closing: We have been trying for months to negotiate a fair and equitable agreement with the building owner. After years of beautiful connections, artful expressions, happy reunions, resistance, healing, community connections AND sub-par space accommodations, property turn over and gentrification we have decided to refocus our energies and efforts.
Anna is focusing her energies toward healing. Rox is working on sustainably building infrastructure, moving the work of 3405 Chicago from a ‘DeFacto’ queer community center to an equitable real POC trans and queer lead community center, so we can continue our path of providing safer healing spaces for Trans, Queer, and GNC folks of color.
The redevelopment, i.e. gentrification, of this property is clear. The newest property owner has informed us that the building will be up for sale again as he is accepting offers starting at $579,990.00 (he purchased for $450,000 November 2017 from Investors Capital who purchased it for $300,000 in September of 2017). There has been no building improvements or upgrades to anything except the rent. Through community sleuthing we found that the RARE space will be listed at about a 48% rent increase after we move out.
Combined, the rents of RARE Productions, Cafe SouthSide, and MTHC are already almost $5000.00 a month. That’s a lot of money for a space that doesn’t fully support the hard work and energy needed to generate that money which could be better directed towards building equity in our own communities.
What’s Next: The Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition will remain in its current location 3405 Chicago Ave S, Suite 103 Minneapolis MN 55407, as we learn from you how to better serve the needs of our community. We will do this by conducting one on ones and continuing community conversations while working with city officials and community partners to better map and share resources.
Getting Involved: To learn more about community conversations visit: https://shorsalkas.wixsite.com/tcqtcenter
We look forward to continuing this work, and building with you in sustainable and equitable ways.
With our deepest gratitude,
Rox & Anna

We are so happy to announce we met last week's match!
What a whirlwind of a couple of weeks. We are still kind of in shock & truly amazed. We never doubted that our communities are strong & giving but raising 100% of the 1st goal of 25k in 24 hours is incredible especially knowing that most gifts were under $50. That speaks volumes to our collective power. Thank you....
House Update: We filled our paperwork out to postpone the sheriff sale. We will be able to reinstate our mortgage at the end of August-Generosity releases the 1st distribution of funds raised after 30 days.
Cafe Update: Identifying gaps & needs. Making plans to address those needs & gaps. Working on a new hiring/staffing plan. Creating Work Plan that includes space usage & events.
It’s been such a surreal & humbling experience for us. Reading your stories assures us that safer spaces are desired & needed in communities & that when those that are able to find such places do indeed grow, learn, find community, network & get the resources from their peers they need to be their authentic selves & thrive.
You’ve helped us reach our 1st goal of saving our house & giving us a moment to stabilize our lives. The 2nd part of this campaign is about putting in place the pieces the cafe needs to be sustainable; we are getting closer & will continue to strive to reach our 2nd goal of 50K.
Your investment in us means so very much & shows so clearly what Cafe SouthSide & 3405 mean to our community.
With Love & Gratitude,
Anna & Rox
Today we are so excited to announce, thanks to an anonymous donor, that for the next 24 hours your donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $1500! So pl...ease, keep posting and boosting!
Community, Thank you for the outpouring of support! This weekend we sat together in our backyard amazed and humbled by the love and generosity our communities have shown. Folks are sharing their stories, and our hearts are filled by them. People have offered to help at the cafe, throw additional fundraisers including yard parties, music classes, dance classes, concerts, art shows, visual art pieces and matching donations.
We have received beautiful messages from so many folks about the impact of our work and Cafe SouthSide. Ari sent us a message a few days ago and said we could share it with you. Thank you to Ari for reaching out and being vulnerable and empowered with us. This is why we do what we do. We know that cafe is a second home for many, including us.
With gratitude and love, Rox & Anna
“Hi, Cafe SouthSide! I'm a MN native, currently in LA, about to move to Boston. I can't stop by and ask what I can do to help, unfortunately, but I'd give what I can. This cafe was the first place I could express my gender identity, the first place, I stopped feeling phony, and the first place I felt free from a bad home situation. Honestly, I think this cafe saved my life when I went to a TYSN meeting there, and the whole ambiance made me think "Hey, maybe I'm going to be alright. Maybe I can get top surgery someday." I decided to stay in high school instead of dropping out, and graduated from Caltech four years later. I'm financially independent now, and am still working on affirming my own gender... but I'm about to start graduate school at MIT this fall! This cafe was the first place where someone asked for my pronouns, and the first place I had a choice. I wish I were an angel investor, and I've never wished that before. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the time I went to your cafe was one of the most important days of my life. Thank you.” – Ari
Some examples of what 3000 dollars could fund at Cafe SouthSide
• A new ice machine- ours has been broken which means we buy ice instead of making it in house which reduces our overhead cost
• A new Espresso Machine- ours is very old and not fully functional, a new one will increase productivity
• 2 weeks of staffing at pay rate of 10 per hour
• 1.5 weeks of staffing at a pay rate of 15 per hour
UPDATE: Save Rox & Anna's Home Phase 2 Cafe SouthSide 50K
From the deepest part of our hearts, THANK YOU! We raised enough to reinstate our mortgage and keep our house, our home. We feel loved and embraced....
With your continued support, we can keep building towards the stabilization of Cafe SouthSide/3405. We know we can end the cycle of survival with the generosity and power of community. Keep boosting and sharing your stories. We love your stories; it validates what we know- centering queer, two spirit, trans and gender non-conforming, indigenous folks and people of color, ensures equity for our communities.
We have been asked by many folks to raise our GOAL amount to $50,000 but the site will not allow us to do that. We did update the title since that could be edited. So, please keep pushing it out!
Here is the link to the livefeed of last night’s community gathering – thank you!
With deep amazement, gratitude and love,
