At least nine charity workers have been killed when a Médecins Sans Frontières hospital was bombed in Afghanistan, near the city of Kunduz – possibly by a US airstrike.

The charity says around 200 people were in the hospital building at the time of the blast.

A US army spokesman said airstrikes in Kunduz "may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility" and that the incident was under investigation.
