2016 CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY CHILI COOK-OFF SMASHES RECORDS
Over 9,000 People Raise Funds to Treat Animals
Charleston Animal Society’s largest fundraising event smashed all previous records in raising over $500,000 for the Animal Society’s medical fund that treats nearly 20,000 abused, ill and injured animals each year. “Record after record was broken as this became the largest animal event in South Carolina history,” stated Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore. “This... raised about $25 per animal that we treat and that goes a long way toward our fundraising efforts to treat so many animals and sustain our No Kill Community.”
The 2016 Chili Cook-off & Oyster Roast on November 19th moved to a new venue at North Charleston River Front Park attracting a bigger crowd than ever before. “We believe that 9,000 people participated as sponsors, teams, donors, judges and attendees,” said Elmore. Preliminary attendance estimates show 7,000 people came through the gates at Riverfront Park to enjoy all-you-can-eat chili and oysters.
More than 100 teams spread out across the park that runs along the Cooper River on the Old Navy Base. Chili was judged in three categories: Traditional, Unique and Best in Show. Teams booths were also judged on Best Presentation.
Everyone from local celebrities, companies, families and friends come together for the animals each year at the Chili Cook-Off. “This was the 17th year of the event, which has grown from a couple of hundred participants to now over 9,000,” said Chili Cook-off organizer Elena Lawson. “Even our local government leaders participate. North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey brought back the 50s with a sock-hop theme and Mt. Pleasant Mayor Linda Page paraded around the event working the crowd costumed as a dog for adoption!”
