2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission! The agency was established in 1968, and today is a large park system featurin...g over 11,000 acres of property. To celebrate this milestone and thank the public for 50 years of patronage, we will be hosting a variety of special experiences, activities and giveaways in the county parks.
Each week, guests to select parks and events will be the recipients of surprise giveaways or free activities from our team of "Memory Makers." Activities and giveaways will vary by date and location, and it's our way of giving back to the community that has support us for 50 years. Share your special memories here, and you could also be a lucky winner!
Thanks to a generous grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, we have improved accessible parking and amenities at Folly Beach County Park. The improvements are invaluable to making your parks available to people of all abilities.
Ali vs. Frazier. Magic vs. Larry. Coke vs. Pepsi. Add Eagle vs. Osprey in the skies over Caw Caw Interpretive Center County Park to the list of great rivalries. Keith McCullough, our Natural History Interpretation Coordinator, captured this awesome photo.
As trail runs go, the "wild rumpus" scheduled for this Saturday is a can't-miss race through the wilds of Caw Caw Interpretive Center County Park! Sign up soon, as there are less than 100 spots left.

Our birds enjoyed a buffet of Menhaden the other morning at the Mount Pleasant Pier. Menhaden prefer water temps around 64 degrees. The Charleston harbor has been hovering around 45 and likely dropped quite a bit during the freeze last week, leading to breakfast being served.
Run, bike, run with us on January 20 at beautiful Laurel Hill County Park! Presented by Anne Moore Endurance Coaching, Mt. Pleasant Velo | Cycling Team, Publix, Kickin' Chicken, Lucey Mortgage Corporation, Trek Bicycle Store of Charleston, and The Foot Store.
The good news is that all of our parks have reopened. The bad news is that we lost our bid to have Splash Island host the luge events at the 2018 Winter Olympic.
The only thing sadder to us than a melted snowman is an empty park. So...all parks will open on time on Tuesday, with a couple of exceptions: Palmetto Islands County Park and Mount Pleasant Pier still have significant ice build-up. We hope to have them open by Tuesday afternoon, and will update as conditions allow.
1/7/18 update: Parks will remain closed on Monday.
Due to significant amounts of snow and ice that remain on the roads and trails within the parks, all of our facilities will be closed on Sunday. With no sun reaching many of the tree-covered areas, the ice is holding fast in too many spots.
I feel like a broken record, but all of our parks and facilities will remain closed and all programs canceled for Saturday, January 6. (Also just realized that the phrase “broken record” probably won’t be understood by anyone under age 20.) #ImOld
