Introductory Remarks

When I was young, and we were at the height of our income issues while facing another eviction, I remember turning toward my sisters in sadness. It took less than a minute of initial heartache for one of us to utter, "It could be worse!" before erupting in laughter.

Thank you to those who gave me the time to come to that place again after last night's results.

More importantly, thank you to this incredible community for embracing me as a candidate for Upper Arlington City Co...uncil! I'll carry with me always the connections I felt while listening and hearing your thoughts. I'm forever glad I ran.

I'm also very proud of how I ran. Our team has no regrets!

This grassroots, volunteer campaign shared a positive and hopeful message for the future of Upper Arlington. It was also an honest one. I never wanted to be the only candidate openly discussing our growing addiction numbers. Elevating this issue in hopes of identifying solutions is something I will continue to do on behalf of this community.

It's in that spirit of honesty and moving forward that we should all acknowledge the potential influence of negative campaigning and money in our municipal election. The intended purpose of the mailers paid for by "UA for Good Government" was to ensure 3 candidates would not prevail on Nov 7th. They were successful. Addressing the public trust that was eroded by these mailers is necessary, or a very awful precedent has been set for future UA elections. It risks delegitimizing our elected officials who did prevail and the work they will do as our representatives.

I do not want to see the home I love, disappointed by this outcome, ripping each other apart once again. It would dishonor Team Burriss' efforts and message.

What I do want to see is a community energized to get more involved, and a City Council who will listen. That is why I am very grateful to Brian Close, Jim Lynch, Kip Greenhill, and Michele Hoyle who have all personally reached out. Their desire to include me in conversations about our future is what UA needs. Their invitation for my participation in the healing process is much appreciated and gladly accepted.

I look forward to the impact I can make through my continued efforts with Leadership UA, the STAND Project, and UAHS Women's Swimming and Diving as a private citizen with a lot of heart. I'm not going anywhere. I'm not discouraged.

This is my home. The home I chose. May we keep working hard together so our greatest days are ahead. #BurrissUA
