Why didn't you or City send even one alert about manhole fire on Christmas morning on Main St? It affected my walking route. And, because of the electricity going out, the Citibank's ATMs were out. Ci...ty was grid lock today with all the trucks trying to fix the results. City might consider a better way to salt its streets and sidewalks so all that excess salt doesn't get washed underground. City was so windy yesterday. City should reconsider putting in all these tall buildings that make areas worse. See More

BIG LAUDATION TO THE CITY OF WHITE PLAINS

Since we have moved to White Plains at the end of June 2017, we have dealt with many departments of the city: the Bureau of Sanitation, the White Plains Scho...ol District, the Public Library, the Department of Building, and the Bureau of Water & Wastewater. We are still amazed by the exemplary service, friendliness and effectiveness of this city and are so happy to live here.

First, we were in touch with the Bureau of Sanitation, because we needed to find out whether we were on the automated garbage pick-up route or not. At first, we were told that we were and that we would receive garbage cans from the city, but half an hour later we received a call by the same clerk informing us that he had just driven by our house in order to be a hundred percent sure and that unfortunately we were still 2 blocks away from the automated route, but that they were working on expanding it. So now we knew and we were very thankful for the extra effort he had put in to figure this out for us.

Next was the White Plains School District. I was worried that our daughter would not get a place on the school bus, because April 1 had been the deadline for the school bus application. The lady on the phone was so nice and uncomplicated. She said that it was absolutely no problem and straightforwardly told me everything I needed to provide in order to submit the application on the same day. When we did, she immediately confirmed the receipt and completeness of our application.

As school hadn’t started yet, my daughter and I went to explore the Public Library of White Plains. I truly believe that that is the most beautiful children’s library in the whole world - The Trove - I have never seen anything like it! There is a reading nook in form of a Pirate Ship, a Castle where you can play board games and draw and be creative, a Grotto where you can watch documentaries, a play area with a toy kitchen and a puppet theater amongst other things, several different children’s computers for every ability and age, an extra computer room for the older children, a movie theatre, many many beautifully arranged displays of books, dvds, cds and even a good selection of foreign language books. And when you think it doesn’t get any better than that? My daughter got her own library card that she proudly signed and told everybody about! She has never felt more empowered!

After being done with the furnishing of the house, we started tackling the garden and soon found out that we needed a “Yard Debris” sticker to put on our garden waste can. For some reason I was dreading that call, as I imagined myself having to go to City Hall to pick up the sticker. When I called and explained what I needed, the clerk just asked me for my address and assured me that it was going to be with me within the next day or the day after. In fact, with the next garbage pick-up I had 2 stickers and an information sheet delivered to my door. Not only was this service fast, but it even saves the city money on stamps by involving the sanitation workers as mailmen.

The same kind of delivery system was used to bring a note to my attention that a city inspector would need to come to check on the completion of a building permit that had been issued by the previous owner of the house. So I called (this time without any hesitation) to schedule an appointment for the inspection and again had the most lovely lady on the phone that gave me an appointment in the blink of an eye and, upon my request, told me exactly what permit the inspection would be about. When the inspector came a couple of days later and found everything in order, he went out of his way by taking the time to explain to me what kind of permits we would need for a future project of ours and he also had a look at our water curb box, as its cap was broken and I needed to know whether it would be our responsibility to fix it or the city’s. He told me to get in touch with the Bureau of Water & Wastewater.

So I did. I called happily as by now I knew I would receive excellent service and I was not disappointed. After explaining what was wrong, the clerk took my address and just said “Alright! I will send the guys around.” The cap of our water curb box was fixed the same day!!!!

Lastly, we received a letter from the White Plains School District telling us that our daughter had a spot on the school bus. I was very happy that her spot had worked out, but had a special request as I have to pick her up myself one day of the week. So I called to inform them about the change to the schedule and the lady I talked to was again so very nice. She wrote down all the dates, told me she would let the driver know and added that I would also have to let the school know about the dates. I acknowledged that, thanked her and mentioned that I would call the school the day after, as I was about to leave the house to go to work. You won’t believe what happened next! A couple of hours later she called me back telling me that she had called the school FOR ME and that they knew about the new pick-up schedule already!!!!!

Other cities should take an example of this wonderful city of White Plains and learn from it!

MY FAMILY AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE CITY OF WHITE PLAINS WHOLEHEARTEDLY FOR MAKING US FEEL SO VERY WELCOME HERE!

During this treacherous winter morning last week, White Plains Police Officer Ahmed Danso-Faried observed an elderly resident having trouble walking up a slippery hill, he stops his patrol car and assists the resident into their apartment building and we caught the whole thing on camera.
