Were we just talking about this?

Do you really know who you’re referring out? Is your pool deep or broad? http://gybcoaching.com/is-your-pool-deep-or-broad/

Is your pool deep or broad? A colleague, we’ll call Sam, was lamenting a disastrous sales call over a cup of hot java this week and I kind of felt bad for him. Sam had been trying …

Been told you have a bad attitude?

Have you ever heard of the tribal method of training? Simply, it is training by watching and word of mouth. In essence Joe is told to watch Betty for two days to find out how he should be doing a task. After two days he is set off on his own. Now, what happens if Betty had a bad attitude or cut

Breathe for the best.

Have you ever watched a champion athlete perform? If you notice, one of the things they do before every performance has to do with their breathing. Deep breathing, or diaphragmatic breathing, is a technique used by peak performers in every arena. As a rule, humans have developed a shallow breathing

Does Public Speaking make you nervous?

Throughout the many years of my career, I have found I love to speak. I am not talking about the talk of conversations, although I do enjoy engaging in discussion, I am referring mostly to speaking in front of groups and in workshops and seminars. There is something really special about sharing the

As always, Jack is thinking about things! Do you agree with him?

One of the reasons I love being a SBO (small business owner) is that my day and my time and where I spend it is my decision. Sometimes I think we forget that, especially after we get an office and then all of a sudden we are back in that 9-5 "gotta get to the office" mindset. Nope. We don't. We are our own boss, a small business owner.

I was remind...ed of that yesterday as I was starting to hit that afternoon lull. Being the SBO, I picked up my stuff and went to Buffalo Wild Wings. The waitresses came to greet me (yeah, they know me) and I settled into a booth. Boy, did I get stuff done. The change of venue, smiling faces and the always full Diet Mountain Dew worked wonders - they always do.

Not only did I recognize that I have the POWER to work wherever is good for me, I also realized something else.

Look around at all the advertising and stuff being pushed out to you - New! Improved! Greater results! Bigger! Better! Don't we have enough change and chaos? Even the same old products are constantly getting new packaging. You can't rely on getting the "red box" at the grocery often anymore because its now orange or purple.

When I walked into the restaurant and Jackie and Katie Bug greeted me like an old friend, I could actually feel the stress in my shoulders release. Ah, the power of familiarity. They knew what I wanted to drink and, get this, order. And it arrived with the special sauce I like and my drink was never empty. Now that's great service - but it's also like comfort food. Like going home and having mom give you a cookie.

In fact, there are some marketers who get it. Do you think the package designers at Kraft Foods can't create a new design for that Macaroni and Cheese box? Of course not. They don't because that blue box is familiar and many of their customers reach for it without giving any thought to those around it.

So yes, strive to provide the Jackie and Katie Bug kind of service to your clients, but give them the comfort of reliable familiarity. Let them know they can count on getting the product or service they need from you.

Now you might argue that there is always room for improvement. Yes, you are correct. Create new and tweak the old. But wholesale change and tossing everything on its ear so it looks bright and shiny and new is not comforting to your clients. Change trickles down the pipeline and there is enough of it inherent in business today - forcing more on your clients might mean a change - right to another provider.

You are the SBO - you have the power!

How much is in that glass? Enough?

Half-empty or half-full? You know, that glass of water and age old question. We all wrestle with the idea of being an optimist or a pessimist, but I challenge you to think a little bigger, dig a little deeper and step back to see the larger picture. Or, in this case, the pitcher. I opine that it
