Dry winter on the Kaibab sparks fire fears

It’s not surprising with the numerous 65 degree days and lack of snow in Williams that La Niña has brought one of the driest winters on record to Arizona. It could also be a sign that an especially volatile wildfire season is on the horizon.

Expected snowfall amounts continue to come down as our Friday storm takes a path through the Great basin that is farther north and east. This will mean less moisture to work with for our area. Attached is the latest snow graphic.

Flagstaff City Government

Starting Feb. 26, 2018, Beaver Street will close from Columbus Avenue to Birch Avenue This closure will allow construction of the final utility and roadway impr...ovements to resume after a winter hiatus.

The north three side streets (Sullivan Avenue, Hunt Avenue and Fine Avenue) will be open to accommodate traffic flow across Beaver Street, and to allow business and resident access on Beaver Street for northern portion of the project. Southbound traffic will be allowed on Beaver Street between Sullivan Avenue and Fine Avenue. A detour will re-route traffic from Beaver Street to Humphreys Street starting at Columbus Avenue and then back onto Beaver Street at the south end of the project. NAIPTA bus route #2 will continue operating temporarily on Humphreys Street during this closure.

Construction is expected to be complete on both Beaver and Dale the summer of 2018.

A temporary closure of I-17 southbound earlier today at Sunset Point allowed a crew to excavate rock that posed a danger of coming loose above the roadway. We completed the work quickly and reopened the freeway a little after 12:30 p.m.

It's a cold one out there this morning. The lowest temperature we've seen so far is -12F up at the Grand Canyon. There are many areas still reporting some ice on the roads so please be careful and be prepared to slow down.

The County will operate under normal hours this morning. Roads may be pretty icy this so please drive safely.

Did you know Coconino County was founded on this date in 1891? Thanks for all the birthday wishes! 127 years go by quick!

Today’s updated weather forecast.

US National Weather Service Flagstaff Arizona

Accumulating snow has not materialized as forecast this morning due to warmer than expected surface temperatures and drier than expected conditions especially f...rom Flagstaff north and west. We still are expecting snow levels to fall through the day as the cold front crosses the region. The question remains how much precipitation will accompany the front. We are watching an area of deeper moisture over the western part of the state which is moving toward the east. This is expected to lead to some enhancement of precipitation especially across the higher terrain as it moves through the region today. However, confidence continues to decrease in how much snow will actually fall. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with the latest updates through the day.
