Since I use other's clippings as mulch in my yard, and to make HOT compost at Compost 'S cool, I'm grateful that a few of my neighbours haven't clued into this message and leave bags of clippings for me to take. I hope someone reading this post wins that sweeeet prize! Good luck!

Brome is budding but hasn't bloomed. This is the week to yank it out and use it as mulch or as a Green in the compost. Get it before it sets its seed!

Every plant gives something to the soil. Pulling weeds usually does more harm than good, so here is a different approach.

'Dandelions have finished blooming so it's time to pull some up and leave them on the soil as mulch. They lose vitality quickly in the sun, and slowly add nutrients to topsoil.'
'Dandelions are great additions to the compost pile, but if you leave them whole they can still set seed. Pull off the seed heads and pop the green part away from the root.'
'Remember that cutworms prefer weeds, especially mixed varieties that are crowded together. I found these two around dandelions and quackgrass. Offer their prefered food and they'll leave your veggies alone. Weed less, get more.'

After weeks of heat and drought my patch of weeds is full of colour and life. The desired perennials are coming along, folks stop to admire the colour, and I have not watered at all. This is a xeriscape like no other, free and uncharateristically pretty.

A quick overview of compost's place in our lives. In your backyard: A static, aerated pile could be built on a pile of small stick and stems to allow air to enter the bottom of the pile. Piles should be about a metre high.
