The EU Should be Reformed but Preserved
The EU, in its earlier incarnations, was born out of the ashes of two world wars. Through many changes and much growth it has served as a mechanism for integration and prosperity in a democratic setting. It has enabled Germany to remain a peaceful country within a larger Europe-wide context. It has been a destination for countries emerging from Fascism and Communism. It has created the largest economic bloc in the world. All this withou...t the despotism of countries such as China or the regressive form of capitalism exemplified by the United States. Germany alone produces and exports more than all of the United States. And it does so, not by operating sweatshops but by treating workers well and providing, like the rest of Europe, a fantastic transport infrastructure based on rail and mass transit, almost free university education and decent quality health care free for all. Free flow of goods, workers and services inside the EU make life and commerce much easier than it used to be.
In spite of many problems, the EU remains today the most advanced model of society in the world. The educational levels are among the highest in the world and life expectancy the longest. The EU needs to prosper not only for the benefit of its citizens but also to remain a living example of what an advanced society and economy can be, in contrast to the socio-economic failure that prevails in the United States and other emerging economies.
That said, the UK could and maybe should gain some autonomy through a light Brexit. And the sooner it goes, the better. The rest of the EU would then be free to integrate in areas such as the military to replace or supplement the wavering NATO alliance. And to better defend itself against enemies foreign and domestic.
