Today, President Trump took steps to end the agreement preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. This was a historic mistake.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) stopped Iran at the brink of developing offensive nuclear capabilities. From my position on the House Intelligence Committee, I have seen the robust monitoring and enforcement mechanisms by the United States and our allies that have ensured Iran’s full compliance with the deal.
We are now closer to... a world in which centrifuges are spinning again in Iran. We are now closer to a world in which people are explaining to me why a military attack is the only way to stop a nuclear Iran. We are now in a world in which North Korea, our enemies and our allies know that an American commitment is worth no more than the paper it is written on. We are not in a world in which the President's fantasy of a better deal is likely.
Against the advice of the world and his own security experts, the President has committed a dangerous act of vandalism and continues a dark and cynical moment in American history.
