Rep. Kuster Speaks in Support of SAFE DRIVERS Act

Today, I was proud to voice my support for the SAFE DRIVERS Act to prevent tragedies like the one we experienced in Randolph this summer when seven members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club lost their lives and three others were injured after a truck collided with their group. The driver responsible for the accident should never have been behind the wheel that day – the individual still had a license due to a loophole where state DMVs often do not process out-of-state infractions. This much-needed legislation would close this loophole and help states implement electronic systems to keep dangerous drivers off our roads. I urge my colleagues to support this legislation to help keep our communities safe.

Good Morning Madam Speaker I rise today to in support of the Safe Drivers Act introduced by my colleague, Representative Seth Moulton. In June of this year, seven members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club were tragically killed in my district when they were hit by a truck that crossed over into the wrong lane on Route Two in Randolph, New Hampshire. The Massachusetts driver responsible for this accident should not have had an active driver's license and should not have. Behind the wheel that day, despite his criminal history, the driver still have a license because of a loophole where state DMV often do not process out-of-state infractions. The Safe Drivers Act would help States implement electronic systems to ensure that dangerous drivers are kept off our roads by incentivizing States to modernize their database. We can keep our road safe and prevent further tragedies.
