    Performed here in Playa del Carmen, Danza de los Voladores is a ritual/ceremonial custom that began in the pre-classical period around Veracruz, Mexico and spread throughout Latin America. It is performed to encourage the gods to end periods of drought. The performer atop the 30' pole balances and plays the flute while 4 others decend on ropes. photo by Ralph Magana.

    Near Playa del Carmen & Cozumel is the Gran Cenote. Cenotes are like massive fresh water caverns found all over the Yucatan Penninsula and that were probably caused by a large meteor impact millions of years ago. The area features some of the world's largest Cenotes that attract scuba divers from around the world.
