The bandstand in Crawley is coming back!
The town’s Victorian bandstand is now a step closer to being restored and relocated to the Memorial Gardens.
Crawley Borough Council has been working with specialist Leander Architecture to refurbish and restore the bandstand after it was moved from Queens Square to make way for the regeneration works in 2016....
The bandstand was placed in storage and is now being returned to its former beauty, at Leander’s workshop in Derbyshire, before being installed in the north-west corner of the Memorial Gardens. The work has been funded by Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.
The restoration work includes minor repairs to the existing columns, arches and roof; new paintwork; repairs or replacements of decorative castings; three new balustrade panels to match the existing ones; and a new feature for the apex of the roof.
Construction of the foundations for the bandstand to rest on will begin in December and be completed in January, ready for the installation of the bandstand, flooring and lighting. Completion is expected in February.
Councillor Chris Mullins, Cabinet member for Wellbeing, said: “I’m delighted that the bandstand will soon be back in the town centre, providing us with a fantastic extra space for events.
“The bandstand was first constructed for Gatwick Racecourse so it will certainly fit in with its new, green surroundings.”
Councillor Peter Lamb, Leader of the Council, said: “The bandstand has an important place in the history of the New Town and we're taking the time to ensure the renovation works live up to that history.
